Anyone know how to make this?
It's fruit in alcohol I think.
My German sister-in-law used to make it.

You needed to start earlier as things ripen

Start with strawberries in around June mix with either gin or vodka and sugar. Swoosh it about and leave it
Then July add raspberries add more gin and sugar.

Repeat the process with autumn fruit blackberries red currents, black currents

Then by Christmas they’ve all blended beautifully to create a very alcoholic topping for whatever. It keeps for ages due to alcohol content.

Is it too late to start now?

reluctantbrit · 07/10/2021 20:01

Too late for this year, you need summer fruits so starting with strawberries and finishing with plums. Then it needs several months to be ideal to eat.

reluctantbrit · 07/10/2021 20:02

@Billybagpuss please no gin, the alcohol is in the name, you need Rum.

It's the right time of year to make sloe gin though which is not dissimilar.

My German gran used to make rumtopf - it was absolutely lethal come Christmas.

I've made it this year but I started in June and finished in September for 3 months of brewing time. I'm going to put it in jars as gifts for people at Christmas.

If it's any help you've still got time to make spiced orange brandy. You can use cheap brandy from Aldi (although obviously the nicer it starts off, the nicer it finishes up!).

Slice the rind off a couple of oranges, thinly (no pith). Put it into a dry frying pan with a few cloves, a cinnamon stick, some peppercorns, allspice berries, and a star anise. Heat it all gently so that you don't scorch it, and when it's really aromatic drop it into the brandy. Then put the whole lot somewhere dark and ignore it til Christmas.

Dropping the spices and orange rind in becomes a lot easier if you decant the brandy into something like a big jar or a demijohn but I have managed to shove it all down the neck of the brandy bottle before.

Oh no!
Didn't realise I'd missed the boat!
The orange spiced brandy sounds heavenly and I don't even think I've ever tried brandy 😂
