What to buy 60 + parents?

Flackattack · 06/10/2021 21:37

I’d welcome all ideas for parents! Budget £35-£70 each.

I have mine and my in-laws and 95 year old nans and I’m drawing a blank!

They all just buy what they like and aren’t overly keen on alcohol or experiences.

I hate wasting money as they are so fussy and not buying gifts is not an option.
I’m reluctant to ask as it spoils the surprise- but might have to!

Ideas from previous years
Gold mag subscription
Fragrance
Molton brown
Joules tops
Ugg slippers
Family games
Lsa glasses
Personalised bird houses & feeders
Glasses cloths

Please share any great ideas!

As an "older" person, I've got everything I need so my DC can just get me a box of chocs, a bunch of flowers, whatever. Just spend your money on the kids!

Minionbums · 07/10/2021 10:56

I wouldn’t buy anything generic… I’m not over 60 but as a woman I get bought loads of gin. And I don’t like gin. So have a good think about what they’re like.

goose1964 · 07/10/2021 11:35

I'm heading to 60 at a frightening rate. My kids know that books are always welcome, or nice bath stuff. My dad can buy wherever he wants so I've bought him an RHS gardening book and a biography of Humboldt.
DH is in that age group , DD has found an old style Pink Floyd t shirt for him, and so far from me he has a mixture of books and coffee.

If the older man in your life has a sense of humour then these t-shirts might appeal grumpyoldmantshirts.co.uk/

I'm 55

I appreciate anything from the skincare range I use.
Pj's which I hate spending money on.
Clarins hand cream.
Pretty hand/guest towels(again hate spending money on)
Books
Voucher for good coffee shop (independent shops not Costa etc)
Anything biscuit or flower wise from Marks and Spencer.
Good quality candles not mass produced kind but craft or more up market brands.
House cardigan ...rather than housecoat/dressing gown.
Good quality socks .
Jewellery
Wine/chocolates / cheese board.
Body lotion
Gilet some beautiful long style ones around.
Something to do with my hobby .

Some great ideas!! I’m going through them all!
I’ll be using these suggestions for a while!

My MIL is always cold so a heated throw
and wrist Warmers are great for her. Any recommendations on the throws?

My dad likes tractors and my FIL likes golf not gold - he probably would like gold!

My mum likes sewing and knitting - I got her a hand made caravan pin cushion but need something else.

A gold golf club Grin

It's tricky isn't it? So much is down to individual preference.

I'm in my 60's and would love:
Cashmere socks (normal socks would be great too)
Photo albums (currently getting all my iPhone photos printed)
A really nice fountain pen and/or decent notebook
Birds of Prey experience
Specific history books / sudoku book
Olaplex or Kerastase hair products
Swiss Army knife
Magazine subscription
I once received some Christian Dior bath oil in a fragrance I thought I didn't like - but surprise, surprise, I loved it and it was such a treat.
Designer soaps (I keep them in my knicker drawer).

I don't want:
A flower subscription (don't like cut flowers) or dried flowers - absolutely no flowers.
Molton Brown (massively overpriced for run of the mill product). I received this last year and still haven't used it all.
Afternoon tea (I don't like being forced into going to specific venues)

One year I bought my parents a bird bath for the garden - that was a big success. Another year I bought them garden centre vouchers.
Every 2 or 3 years I get DM satin pyjamas - which she always appreciates.
Last year I got DM an Estée Lauder skincare gift set.

Hope you come up with something Op.

SpindleWhirl · 07/10/2021 23:49

A lovely scarf. Two lovely scarves. A lovely horse.

Summer776 · 08/10/2021 00:06

*Theatre tickets/voucher
*Afternoon Tea voucher
*A loved picture painted and framed (easy to find on local FB pages. We had my parents last very loved dog painted and it was very well received)

  • An experience via Groupon/Wowcher. (My mum loved her time cuddling Meerkats with her granddaughters and daughter and it was something she would never have thought about doing!)
DelphiniumBlue · 08/10/2021 00:07

So that description fits me and I would like some socks that work with my new DMs, wristwarmers from Turtle Dove, a small silver necklace, something nice to do, like maybe a local silversmithing class, books ( maybe some of current Booker Prize nominations or similar), heavy duty handcream, tickets for a show or band, a beret from Gudrun Sjoden...how much are you wanting to spend?
My Mum isn't quite as old as your Grandmother, but she likes consumables, small quantities of her favourite tipples, nice cheeses, and soft warm things that she wouldn't necessarily buy herself because "it's a waste" - she really feels the cold now, and what with fuel increases she needs to be warm .. throws and fleecy things that also look nice. She also loves to be taken out to eat, and gadgets.
DH (60) likes books on current affairs, fancy alcohol (decent whisky/port) expensive socks for walking.
HTH.

Stompythedinosaur · 08/10/2021 01:57

I think some of the replies have been quite unkind - just because you wouldn't personally like what another person has suggested doesn't make it a bad suggestion.

Successful presents I've given to dm have been a good quality water bottle for going walking, various planters, or tracking down a particular plant my dm has mentioned. Dmil has appeared to like theatre vouchers or tickets to a particular show. Both like photobooks of the things we have done that year, and request these as gifts.

Flackattack · 08/10/2021 07:23

I really appreciate all the suggestions! My MIL hates flowers but my mum loves them! So as you say not everything suits everyone but good suggestions none the less!
We have a few (we choose and like to buy for) so it’s good to have a range of things to look at that I might not have thought of as it’s nice to give a great gift as opposed to any old thing!

I was given These White Company decirations last year and love them .
I second a lot of these suggestions.
I will be 70 at Christmas and small and luxurious is my tip.
I can buy what I need but struggle with treating myself.
Yes yes to cashmere anything. My mil is getting me a Turtledoves neck warmer.
My heated throw came from Lakeland and is fabulous.
I also want the local OS footpath map that comes with an app so I can use it on my phone.
I love my Fitbit.
My purse is made by [[https://www.elvisandkresse.com/collections/purses Elvis and Kresse] they use recycled fire hose and are wonderful. I also have two of their handbags and DH has a keyring with his phone number on.
Power bank for phone .
3 metre phone lead.
Cover for kindle or iPad or phone?
I walk a lot so good walking socks.
Also on that line Snag woollen footless tights.
Candle .
Bath bridge. Love a bath with a glass of wine and candle.
Hair turban
I will stop now Xmas Grin

junebirthdaygirl · 08/10/2021 07:58

I am 60 and would like the same things l liked when l was 30
Books..any new highly recommed ones just out
Gym gear
House plants rather than flowers as they last longer
Magazine subscription
New boots but l would need to choose those
Any large pot for my patio with or without a plant

WhenWeFirst · 08/10/2021 10:12

Something I would really like now I'm 'getting on' 😀

If I use my iPad/phone/Switch too much I have trouble with my wrists/fingers/joints so I would like a purpose made support cushion to rest on my lap when using them. I once saw one in a local garden centre and wish I'd bought it at the time.
Something like this:

snowspider · 08/10/2021 10:36

Nothing generic for me, no to flower subscriptions and afternoon tea too stiff and formal for me.

Hopefully my family know my taste by now so books, yes to literary fiction, cookery books of a particular country/memoir kind - or Diana Henry etc that I don't have already no over hyped TV chefs.

I want and will have to buy for myself I think the new Taschen Frida Kahlo book that came out this year.

Socks or leg/wrist warmers
Leggings
Thermal long sleeved vest

New walking boots obviously I need to choose these!

I'd like to try Cashaca so a bottle of that
Expensive scented church candle of the brand I can't remember that Nigel Slater likes
The new Nigel Slater cookbook

A heated throw
Anything from Emma Shipley except a scarf, but not one of the three trays I already have but quite happy to have more trays!

A poly beehive or two

A stand mixer, a reconditioned Kenwood of old would be fab

Olive oil soap bars, French and big
A huge wooden chopping board, hand made with lots of character

Plants and trees, I'll give you a list!
A garden bench with an engraving or a piece of slate with an engraving, poetry or a quote that has significance for me or I will appreciate

Christmas tree ornament

Something from Gudrun

Thank you Grin

snowspider · 08/10/2021 10:38

Cachaca I struggle to remember what it's called

HairyDuck · 08/10/2021 10:42

80sMum · 08/10/2021 10:54

I am over 60 and I definitely wouldn't want anything that doesn't get either used up or disposed of within a few weeks. I don't want anything permanent, as I already have too much "stuff"!

I don't use perfume or diffusers or scented candles etc as the strong and sickly smells they produce make me feel ill.

I don't use shower gels or bubble baths and already have about 5 years supply of soap!

So, for me the following would be acceptable:

Edible items, such as chocs, nice hamper etc (but not loads!).

Interesting varieties of tea.

Flowers (but preferably not those postal ones that I have to faff around with and arrange myself, as I'm useless at it and they never look right when I've arranged them!).

I always tell my DCs not to get me anything at Christmas - and usually they oblige.

Whatwillbewilbe · 08/10/2021 11:16

I'm turning 60 at Christmas and I would love to get some Balsam Hill Christmas tree ornaments.

Kirst26 · 08/10/2021 11:39

I have seen a Butterfly house and butterfly attracting seeds which I think my Dad would like :)

Keladrythesaviour · 08/10/2021 12:13

I've posted this in several threads and had a few PMs thanking me so I'll post it again incase it helps anyone with hard to buy for parents who like a good hamper:

Nillynally · 08/10/2021 15:24

Those clever plug sockets that connect to apps on your phone so you can turn things on remotely. Can also connect to Alexa/google too.

I initially thought you were buying for 60 parents and clicked because I was intrigued why you had this many parents to buy for 🤣

BlueChampagne · 08/10/2021 15:42

My Dad's in his 80s and gets an annual Private Eye subscription from me, usually accompanied by chocolate.

gettingolderbutcooler · 08/10/2021 17:52

Framed photos of family?
I bought mil a magazine subscription.
