A different NYE ideas?

I have never enjoyed New Year's Eve and usually I go to bed before midnight and ignore it. I'd like to do something different, no parties etc just something peaceful with dh.

Thinking of wrapping up and going to our favourite spot with a little drink or something. Any better ideas?

Last year we had a cheese fondue and then spent the evening putting together a scrapbook of our year.

BeaLola · 24/09/2021 22:51

Depends where you live of course but picnic on the beach ?

We always have takeaway that night with DS , watch a film and with our drink at midnight have sparklers outside - daft but tradition for us Smile

Sn0tnose · 25/09/2021 14:49

This year we’re planning on having a couple of family members round for a buffet and some board games. I’m not expecting her to make it to anywhere near midnight as she’ll be heavily pregnant and probably knackered, but it’s something we do together quite often and it’s a fun, relaxed evening.

I think your idea is lovely.

Taiyo · 25/09/2021 15:06

We had a BBQ a few years ago, which was a lot of fun!

I like the idea of cheese fondue and games, too.

Last year, my parents decided to go for a walk to a local beauty spot with a bottle of champagne and toast in the new year. I told them they were mad and should stay home in the warm! Sure enough, the ground was really icy and they couldn't walk back. It took them hours in the freezing cold and they were utterly traumatised. My poor mum didn't think she was going to make it. The thing is, I can guarantee, this year they will have forgotten all about it and will say they are going again. They are mad!

WildFlowerBees · 25/09/2021 15:54

I like all of these ideas, will add sparklers to my list. I'm torn between going up on the moors if it's not heaving with rain and being at home because my cats are terrified of fireworks and the knob up the road let's them off in his garden every single year.

I don't know why I want to see in 2022 but I feel I should, quietly.

NYE is board games/card games night for us - I love it!

Randomness12 · 25/09/2021 19:37

We choose a new recipe to cook from scratch, something comfort food style like a curry or homemade pasta, have a few drinks and a big bag of pick ‘n’ mix. We watch a film on tv or Jools Holland until we lose interest and go to bed - usually before midnight. Suits us and means we can keep an eye on our dog who hates fireworks. This year we will have a newborn too and DD will be in bed at 7.

Taiyo I'm sorry but couldn't help but laugh at the beauty of their idea matched with the reality!!

It's something I would do, poor things! It could have become quite the tragedy.

It's always a non starter here as well. Last year some locals decided to set off fireworks by hand, one went into a Neighbours roof, another shot under a car which we thought couid blow so I'm almost scared about going out and coming back through that but also.. Not staying in to monitor damage and possibly fire. Sad

Having said that I also love the sound of the fondue!!

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 25/09/2021 20:34

I’ve never particularly enjoyed NY Eve either even though it’s a huge thing in my family. The best NY Eve I ever had was playing Mahjong with my friends family, they celebrate Chinese NY so it wasn’t a big deal for them and it was a great night and the start of my sober NY Eve tradition.

This year we have 3 nights away booked in a nice hotel with lots of festive kids activities, we head home NY Eve so it will probably be a detour to McDonalds for dinner or order pizza in when we get home and in bed as soon as the DCs are asleep.

It's ok. I laughed about it too. Yes, it was definitely a plan that was good in theory but New Year's Eve is just so bloody cold.

Last year we dressed up, made cocktails and a three course dinner, and then played along with Big Fat Quiz (I think we recorded it) before watching the countdown with champagne.

Burgerqueenbee · 27/09/2021 09:21

We usually get a takeaway in, and I like to spend a couple of hours in the evening being peaceful and reflecting on the past year as well as setting a couple of goals for the new year.

number87inthequeue · 27/09/2021 09:33

Why not celebrate the new year on New Year's Day, rather than NYE? DH is usually working on NYE and I was never a big fan of it anyway so for many years I had an early night then we did a New Year's Day celebration with the DC during the day eg. day out/nice meal and films and games indoors/friends over for lunch etc. I always felt more positive celebrating the year to come rather than the one that's gone and everywhere is fairly quiet on NYD as most people were out drinking the night before.

haba · 27/09/2021 11:42

We don't usually celebrate NYE (well, since having children, that is) but my children are now asking to stay up and celebrate... so I am thinking we will have a nice dinner, then do something together such as a quiz or a board game. I think they will actually be bored some time before midnight! (They're too young to drink!)

Taiyo · 27/09/2021 12:07

You can do it Japanese style and get up early on New Year's day and watch the first sunrise of the year. I' not sure I could be arsed though. 🌅

Gilly12345 · 27/09/2021 15:31

I don’t mind NYE but don’t make much of a fuss, generally have a takeaway or cook something nice, don’t have people around as will see people the next day, will have a shower, pjs on and watch some tv, generally in bed before midnight. 😀🍸

BigGreen · 27/09/2021 15:39

This year we're going to see the lights at Kew :)

MissyB1 · 27/09/2021 16:00

Going to air bnb for New Year, in the middle of nowhere! Our dog is terrified of fireworks, so we have to get out of town.

I love this idea! I will be up early anyway so this would be lovely. Not sure dh will think so

I hate New Year usually so this year we’re going to an Uber luxury hotel with a private hot tub on the terrace. They’re doing a 2 night deal including a big NYE dinner/dancing/fireworks with brunch and dinner the next day. I cannot wait!

KimmyKimdoo · 30/09/2021 22:48

Make a scrapbook of the year in the day.

Cook something special, all dress up and sip mocktails together.

Coats on, outside and do a big fake countdown to midnight at 8pm. Sparklers and spotting fireworks. Fire pit in the garden, toast marshmallows with the kids. Make resolutions.

Kids to bed. Jools Holland on and have a glass of wine with DH. Play chess / cards and relax. Cheers to new year, sneak in to kiss the kids on the cheek and go to bed.

Up early for big cooked breakfast and first walk of the year somewhere lovely.

TheHoneyFactory · 08/10/2021 00:24

i really dislike the forced partying/expectations of NYE. so we celebrate NY day. Its summer here (and usually roasting hot) so its nice to be up and out early walking in the forest or by the river early morning fishing.

Jumpingintochristmas · 08/10/2021 01:57

We have done the same thing with the same friends for a decade with the exception of last NYE.
NYE we host, DH, DD10 and I plus two late teen DC’s and their date, friends, their DC x 4. The kitchen table is transformed into a giant graze table/buffet (long before it was trendy) and we drink champagne, dance around the house, chat, play games etc. By 1am everyone has headed for home, DH and I tidy up and collapse into bed!

NYD the same group meet up and walk around our local woodland with flasks of hot chocolate, marshmallows and rum chasers for the adults!
We then change and go to my parents for a traditional steak pie NYD dinner.

I love it.
