My PILs are really difficult to buy for (they are fortunate enough to be able to afford whatever they want, when they want it) so I thought I had come up trumps with MILs pressie this year...

As she is partially sighted I thought she would appreciate a charity gift through Sightsavers International. So the other week I bought 2 trachiosis (sp?) operations and a cataract operation for people in the third world. Figured she would appreciate the act of helping others not so fortunate regain their sight...

Anyway, on Saturday she told us that she had been diagnosed with a cataract in her good eye DH and I exchanged alarmed looks (not only for the cataract) as we realised the significance of our gift.

I don't think she will be offended/think we are taking the p**s, but it still sits a bit uncomfortably with us (iykwim?) I reckon another browse through the charity gift guides is in order...

Any chance Sightsavers could 're-allocate'? maybe you could call them and redirect your gift money?

Are you sure she will be uncomfortable?

Won't she see it as a good thing because I assume she's having NHS treatment and the gift will help someone going through the same as her?

I hope you can sort it

I don't think she would be uncomfortable, but we feel a bit weird about it.

I think it's just the sods lawness of it. First time that we ever buy a charity gift and it is to cure the very thing she gets newly diagnosed with!!

I would explain you got it before you knew about the cataracts.I am sure she will understand. Also having been and going through it herself she will most probably be glad that someone else is benefitting from this giftt
You sound as though you put a lot of thought into it and I think you should give it her.

MissusHoHoHo · 05/12/2007 22:56

I think we will pjgirl - DH thinks I'm being over-sensitive...

I think it makes your gift even more relevant and special. Even quite spiritual!

I think it is a highly appropriate gift meself...
