Does anyone here eat something other than a roast for Christmas Dinner?

Was hoping to change the tradition of a big roast dinner at Christmas- I find them dull and uninspiring. If you cook another type of Christmas Dinner, what else do you cook and why?

If you have good remixes on a traditional dinner I would like to hear it too! Need inspiration.

We have fillet steak and dauphinois potatoes with Parma ham asparagus, creamed spinach etc.

Mainly because we were bored of normal Christmas dinner but also because it means dm spends less time in the kitchen and leas clean up

Hoppinggreen · 20/09/2021 22:14

We go out for a curry

TheChip · 20/09/2021 22:17

Mince and dumplings I can see it being this year for us.
Christmas Dinner can be whatever you want it to be.

Sodoi · 20/09/2021 22:19

We did the same as Senorasurf last year and then for New Year did roast goose.

StarryStarrySocks · 20/09/2021 22:20

We also go out for a curry. I would recommend it!

AnnieSnap · 20/09/2021 22:22

We don’t eat meat, so our Christmas dinner isn’t traditional. Just think of a lovely meal that you’ll all enjoy and have that.

DevilFinger · 20/09/2021 22:24

We've had curry, steak, fish ( a mix of seafood, calimari, salmon etc) this year will probably be what ever is on the shelves... Grin

ZandraPlackett · 21/09/2021 08:55

We do Japanese Christmas dinner - Fried chicken! We do a proper fancy version soaked in buttermilk and make gravy, Korean yum yum sauce and other accompaniments. We do a Christmas dinner during Christmas week too, but mainly for the leftovers!!

Ted27 · 21/09/2021 09:01

Lasagne followed by apple crumble and custard

languagelover96 · 21/09/2021 09:20

Yeah I have smoked salmon and ham with baked apples instead. This year I'm going to try a potato salad with accompaniments for lunch or dinner.
Some more alternative ideas
Biscuits, fish and tarts
Curry and yuletide cake with alcohol
Pork pies, ham sandwiches and mince pies
Christmas pudding, roasted potatoes and stewed pears
Roast chicken, spinach and leftover sausage rolls
Chinese style fried rice, soy sauce and won ton noodles
Quiche Lorraine, cookies and left over meat or fish
Pumpkin soup and cocktails
Baked apples with chicken and sweets for dessert
Salad and meat

I've had all sorts of different meals, including no Christmas dinner at all because was travelling in a non Christian country. Salmon and braised fennel, beef bourgignon served with sprouts and yam wedges, beetroot and nut roast served with seasonal veggies. Have whatever you all fancy. I can't stand turkey personally.

The year DC3 was born we had a takeaway curry which was brilliant. It changed the whole focus of the day and although dinner was still a lovely celebratory event it was a lot less stressful and we all had more time to spend doing other things.

This year we're having a Christmassy afternoon tea on Christmas Day. We'll have ham and the accompaniments when we see family and friends a few days later. It will be a lot more work in the run up but should be less on the actual day.

DH's birthday is Christmas Day and it's a big one this year so we wanted it to feel a bit different.

gamerchick · 21/09/2021 09:45

We order a curry in the night before. I get loads of nice nibbly bits though that we don't normally have during the year. Just reheat and only plates to wash. What's not to like? Grin

hellcatspangle · 21/09/2021 16:26

Not generally but we might go for a curry this year for a change.

ShushShushShush · 21/09/2021 17:16

@Ted27

Lasagne followed by apple crumble and custard
This, is what I have been lobbying to have for literal years.

Its hard to see someone else living your dream.

Ted27 · 21/09/2021 17:34

@ShushShushShush

personally I would have a big roast dinner, but my son disagrees

This year we will break with tradition. We have a glut of damsons, I have frozen a tub so we can have damson crumble.

We also have allotment raspberries and blueberries for Christmas breakfast smoothies

Myshitisreal · 21/09/2021 17:50

Last year I was really unwell so we got a huge indian takeaway on Christmas eve and ate in Christmas day. That's the first ever takeaway.

Previous years involved asian banquets we've made from scratch. My husband is a vegetarian who hates roast dinners, so when it's just us we just pick what we really want to eat.

It depends on so many Things but as long as it makes you happy, fill your boots. Eat what you want. If you want chips and egg have chips and egg. Christmas is as special as you make it so eat what makes you very happy. There's no rule

AlfonsoTheMango · 21/09/2021 18:13

When I was growing up we often had oysters and lobster for Christmas lunch.

Xtraincome · 21/09/2021 18:18

Oh my goodness! What a great thread to come back to after a long day at work Smile

Love the idea of takeaway bought the day before. If we had a Persian place near us I would absolutely order Persian for Christmas day. DH is half-Iranian and the portions are crazy generous.

I am super inspired! In that case then, I will put forward my choice for Christmas day dinner:
-steak with beef dripping chips, mac and cheese and chargrilled broccoli

  • peanut butter chocolate cheesecake for pudding
  • cocktails and mince pies for afters

I will now officially leave the roast dinner to mum for boxing day. I will relax into my day more if I can actually look forward to cooking on the day Smile

We go out for a curry.

elQuintoConyo · 21/09/2021 18:23

Saltimbocca, very tasty. Slightly faffy but we love it.

Sopa de galets: soup with giant snail-shaped pasta stuffed with meat. Bloody LOVE this soup
and make it several times over the winter period.

Xtraincome · 21/09/2021 18:23

@AlfonsoTheMango that's some fancy Christmas right there. Love it!

@Ted27 I think I need to buy a pudding off you please?!

@ZandraPlackett I can do buttermilk fried chicken and it's lush! I use the Clinton St Baking recipe but I am sure yours has some way better accompaniments than mine.

@languagelover96 sounds divine!

Really great ideas Mumsnetters!

Chinese. For the past 15 years at least. Prob more.

Our local charges the same as any other day. Unless you go to out sit in local Chinese, which is dearer on Christmas Day, and we sometimes do that but not since covid.

The beauty of not having a thousand dishes to wash. It really makes it Christmas!

TeaMeBasil · 21/09/2021 18:33

We made Paella a couple years ago - delicious!

MsMiaWallace · 21/09/2021 18:35

Last 2 years we've had Indian!
First time went out, last year ordered Christmas Eve had Christmas Day.
It is fabulous & cheap!
