Thinking about it for Christmas for dd8 and ds6 . Advice? Yes or no? They've not asked for it but lots of friends got them

I've got one for my 6 and 4 year olds! Have heard good things!

My kids like theirs but now they have phones and fortnight on the ps4 they get played with less. The feature to use on a big screen on as a handheld is great as you can take it on holiday.

I wanted to buy one for DD13 last year but they were sold out everywhere, not sure what stock levels are like now.
I wouldn't buy kids that age something they haven't asked for because it will just collect dust otherwise, also not to be that person but 6 sounds young and I found with DD she had zero interest in digital gadgets but as soon as I bought her one she wasn't interested in anything else and it's hard to get her off now!

It's an expensive present considering it's not something they've shown an interest in. Buying as a shared present is also likely to cause arguments, so it would be a no from me.

My eldest has a switch and uses it all the time, she loves it and the fact her friends have them too is a good thing, they can play the multiplayer games together, but you do need to invest in the online membership to allow them to do that and to play some games properly.

I have bought the two middle children switch lites for Christmas, my eldest doesn't use hers through a tv or docks it much so it seemed a waste to have three of the same consoles in the house for the price.

The only thing with the switch lites is they do feel very light, and delicate, so I have bought cases to help avoid scratches alonside screen protectors to give it some protection from being dropped, and hard shell cases with game storagage for etra protection and hopefully so they don't lose the cartridges. My eldest as lost most of her cartridges as she is a little messy and they are very small/easily lost.

We have one and they are great for that age. If it is to share you need to choose the games carefully so they can play together. Mario party and Mario kart are favourites here.

We got one last year for 5 and 7 year olds, it's been fab, I even ended up buying myself a switch lite afterwards! However, it wasn't purchased 'for them' it was a family gift (to us from us!)

They don't have the console down as an individual one, it's docked and connected to the TV and then we bought additional controllers, I worry they'd break it if it wasn't in there safe.

We've had a switch for 3 years now - DC are 8 and 6. It gets used most days - Mario, Pokemon, Minecraft and Animal Crossing are all popular here. It was originally intended as a family gift but DS (8) plays it more than anyone else. It's good that it can be a TV console or a handheld.

We bought our dds (then 10 and 7) one two Xmases ago which timed nicely with lockdown the following March/April time. So I think it prob got played more than usual as we used to alternate movie nights with Mario nights etc to ease boredom. We also invested in additional controllers and have it plugged into the main Telly.

That said, it still gets played at least once a week and is a good way to separate the kids to stop fights kicking off....eg. eldest dd can go and watch tv in one room and I'll play a quick round of Mario party with dd2.

Good games are Mario kart, Mario party, animal crossing. We also got Lego Harry Potter which was a semi hit with the kids....but I adore it and quite often will have a wee play when taking lunch break when wfh!
