They've just emailed to say that they won't be doing food to order in NI this Christmas, due to supply issues. They've also suspended cake, wine, flower and hamper ordering.

Absolute joke.No attempt to even offer alternative local products. Bloody Britain and bloody Brexit. Once again NI is shafted.

I ordered a coat from NorthFace last night and noticed a banner across the top of the website saying they weren't delivering to NI at the moment!

Atla · 17/09/2021 16:45

I've just had this email too! Bah Humbug. I feel disproportionately bothered by it. Bollocks to bloody Brexit and to us getting shafted again!

Feeling distinctly like a second class citizen of the UK these days.

😮 you’re kidding that’s not fair at all! Though supply is ridiculous at the moment so I can see why….

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/09/2021 19:12

I know. I found out about 2 weeks ago. Fucking gutted, I hope the short sighted, narrow minded Brexit voters are happy with themselves for shafting NI.Angry

Same for the Republic, apparently. They seem to be sending me an email for every option, just in case.

There was an announcement here in Ireland during the week to the same effect.

Tbh people didn't really care, most buy Christmas foodie bits from Aldi or Dunnes anyway as they source from Irish suppliers. M&S food always had to come overseas from another country, iykwim.

But I can certainly see how people who identify as British in NI would be rattled a lot by it.

Sure, I don't get everything from there and it's not the end of the world - obviously there are plenty of other options. But only supermarket near me is Asda & doesn't have great amount of choice so I'll have to schlep miles to get anything 'special'. I liked just being able to order and collect e.g a fancy dessert, party food and nice pate or whatever.

That's what you get for living in the sticks I suppose!

I am English, although I've been here for the best part of 15 years - maybe there is an m &s Christmas food cultural element, although I hadn't really thought about it until now Grin Irish DH loves an m&s Christmas trifle as well though, ha!

Things are very tough for NI at the moment, I feel sorry for them. I'm finding in Ireland that there are things that I can't get, even things that don't originate in the UK because the UK is often the local distributor for Ireland too. But at least Ireland has always had its own supply chain for all the necessities so it's just the odd thing that is harder to get.

For the last decade or so my Mum used to order the whole Christmas from M&S when it was her turn to do Christmas dinner, so she will miss it. I find that Dunnes has come up to M&S standard for pre-prepared Christmas things, and my local Dunnes has a posh butchers in it that I ordered a stuffed and rolled turkey crown from last Christmas and it was delicious. So I won't miss M&S Christmas fare much.

One of my friends here is an immigrant so hasn't grown up with the history. She asked me if I thought that there would ever be a united Ireland and I said that I think it's currently the closest it's ever been. Not because most people in Ireland want it and not because most people in NI want it but because the current UK govt just keeps demonstrating, over and over, how little they care (or even think) about their citizens in NI. At the moment they are a small percentage, entirely ignored part of the total UK population. If they were part of Ireland they would be back in the EU and quite a big fish in a small pond population and influence wise. It must be a bit tempting, even to some of the unionists. It probably would be a bit of a pain for Ireland though, we have enough difficult people in the Dail without adding the worst of the NI politicians.
