Games for 5yo DD

DD tells me she's "not a fan of toys, and prefers games".

What are your top tips for games for 1, 2 or 3 people (including DD)?

Some orchard toys games are great, but go for ones with higher ages. The ones which are age 2 or 3 plus are all really boring lotto type games, or a variation on "pairs" and so repetitive (e.g. shopping list, red dog blue dog, 1 dog 10 frogs, lunch box game)

sunflowerdaisies · 04/09/2021 00:24

Mine 5 year old loves skipbo - it says 7+ on it but he's got the hang of it ok and we like it too!

ZombiePara · 04/09/2021 00:25

Frustration!!

If she is past dominoes, up the ante with triominos

JedEye · 04/09/2021 00:26

Yes I second sleeping queens and labyrinth. Also recommend Screwball Scramble

irresistibleoverwhelm · 04/09/2021 00:28

There’s a great board game for that age called Enchanted Forest.

kavalkada · 04/09/2021 05:50

We started playing more serious games when mine was five:

  1. Kingdomino (fun for kids and adults)
  1. Labyrinth
  1. Azul (this one is for more grownup kids, but something clicked with my son, he loved the tiles)
  1. Qwirkle (I wrote numbers, but he played all by himself)
  1. Uno
  1. Jenga
  1. Zombie kids evolution (try it, you'll love it as much as your kids will)
  1. Enchanted Tower - I never see anyone mentions this one, but it is the most beautiful game I have ever seen for kids, and it is fun for children and adults
  1. Magic Labyrinth
  1. Dragomino (won the award for best children's game this year)

Dobble and Bop It are both popular with all ages in my house.

MyNameForToday1980 · 04/09/2021 10:45

Thanks so much for the recommendations.

We've got a bunch of Orchard games (agreed, good quality, and fun - but get pretty samey at this age). I've added Red Dog Blue Dog to the list as that looks like some sort of bingo game, which is a different skill to general matching.

I've also bookmarked Labrynth, Junior Scrabble, Guess Who, Zombie kids evolution, and some animal Top Trumps.

@Cantdecidewhere Thanks for reminding me of Bop It - that's a great call - I used to love playing that at my younger cousins' house (when I was ~20yo).

@JedEye I'm pretty sure I've got my own Screwball Scramble somewhere around the house. I bought it from eBay about 10 years ago in a moment of nostalgia.

My next challenge is buying games from somewhere other than Amazon.

I'm not an anti-Amazon-warrior, but it'd be so easy just to plonk them in my basket and receive them tomorrow, but it'd be nicer and more ethically sound to go to a toyshop instead.
