Annuals - which are good and are they popular?

I've been looking at annuals for soon to be 6, 7 and 8 year olds.
Are they still a thing, and still popular or are they something adults like and kids aren't fussed?
Wondering about Beano for soon to be 7 yo and Jacqueline Wilson for 8 yo. I don't know either very well, 7 yo likes Harry Potter but there doesn't seem to be a HP one except Lego.
No brainwaves for soon to be 6 yo. She's not reading independently yet so maybe not best idea.

My son loves a Lego annual but my youngest isn’t really fussed, I’d say if they enjoy magazines they will be a hit.

Not an annual but my eldest ( never a big reader) always enjoys getting the Guinness book of records each year.

My youngest likes national geographic infopedia

My 5 year old loves an annual. You don't need to be able to read well, they can do the puzzles and colouring and just look at it. Last year she got a Disney Princess one and a LoL doll one. DS3 got a Natural History Mueum one and liked it but still a bit too young really.

Annuals were much better in the days of Bunty and Judy Grin

We had a tradition of letting the DC choose their own annuals in the January sales - £1 or £2, and I didn’t have to think about who liked what.

I've bought the Beano and Dandy Annuals for more years than I care to remember. I think they are probably the best ones. I bought them for all my dc at one point or another and I still but them now "for tradition" as dd would miss not having them.

Dd7 likes Jacqueline Wilson or LOL. I always put an annual in her stocking!

They're not what they were imo.
Cheap copied stuff that has been around for ages in other mags etc.
They used to be amazing 20-30 years ago.

I remember the fantastic Neighbours and Home and Away onesGrin

I looked at a beano in a real life shop the other day and felt nostalgic for how they used to be. Rubbish paper but fatter with more content and in the summer you got bumper editions.
Sounds like annuals still have some fans, even if they aren't what they were, so that's really helpful. Thank you!

Last year the pound shop had loads of annuals so worth keeping an eye out, that way if they're not a big fan at least you haven't spent loads

I've decided not to bother this year, neither child looks at them.

I do buy them some books each year which they read.

mamabluestar · 19/09/2021 14:15

My 10 year old loves his Beano annual- the ones from years past are read and re-read over and over. He has a Beano subscription and he's never mentioned any repetition

psuedocream3 · 19/09/2021 15:44

I would wait until they are a bit cheaper, around £2.50 I think they go to?

I like them for my middle child who isn't a fan of reading but will happily sit and read an annual so it's worth it to encourage her. They have such a good range these days, I think I will be after roblox, minecraft and among us if they do those.
