Christmas Day Pud

What are you planning for pudding this year?

I'm determined to make something delicious as last year's pud was a complete failure! I ended up burning the brownie in a trifle... I thought it would be OK but it honestly tasted like we were chewing on fag ash...

Were you making Nigella's black forest gateau trifle by any chance? Shop bought choc muffins work well as the base for that and are a bit lighter than brownies.

I might do a pavlova this year. I don't like a heavy dessert on Christmas Day.

NorthernDramaLlama · 25/08/2021 22:30

For the last 5 years we have had Nigella's yule log. With Christmas pudding for those who wanted 2 desserts! The log is easy but time consuming and one of my fav parts of Christmas Eve!

dmudbur · 25/08/2021 22:31

No, it was Jamie Oliver's 'Epic Chocolate Trifle' but funnily enough, it was anything but epic! (my fault entirely).

Ooh, I've not made a pavlova before. I've always thought they were quite difficult to make?

I made a Jamie Oliver chocolate bombe pudding one Christmas and it turned out perfectly but tasted horrible. It had nuts and cherries in it so it sounded lovely but we ended up giving it to the birds.

I’ve been asked to do this again www.taste.com.au/recipes/raspberry-white-chocolate-waffle-pudding/0342c507-67cd-4b0e-8302-bac4be52f402

CurryLover55 · 26/08/2021 07:12

We usually just have a bought Christmas pudding but I do like DM’s recipe for St Stephen’s Pudding, which is orange & lemon & a bit lighter.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/08/2021 07:27

I made this a couple of times a long time ago. It was excellent, quick and easy to make, not ridiculously expensive, and ideal to make in advance as it needs to go in the fridge to chill. Must find an occasion to make it again! As the link says, it was on a recipe card I picked up in Sainsbury's - mascarpone and lime cheesecake. The chocolate decorations are optional. I didn't bother with them, but I can see for Christmas Day you might want to do something like that.

www.cookipedia.co.uk/recipes_wiki/Mascarpone_and_lime_cheesecake

(Note under recipe says some people use Philadelphia instead of Mascarpone - that could work, but I love Mascarpone, so would stick to that.)

MissyB1 · 26/08/2021 07:29

I have my own recipe for a Sherry trifle, the family demand it every Christmas. It’s very boozy! Grin

Oooh. I have added that to my file.
Dgc love waffles and raspberries!

FizzyLizzie · 26/08/2021 08:01

Delia’s Christmas pud for us, we all love it and there would be a mutiny if I didn’t make it. I do fancy a yule log too . . .

Callmecordelia · 26/08/2021 08:08

Pavlova isn't difficult, and it can be made with lots of different fruits and toppings, so you can practice in advance and not be sick of it. It's easier than meringue for me.

I also make the nigella yule log, but what I mostly do is make her sour cream chocolate cake either on or just before Christmas eve. When I was little my mum made something called "children's Christmas cake" which was a chocolate fudge cake with as many decorations on it as we could cram on - Robins, deer, santa, fir trees etc - and we'd eat it over Christmas. I do the same with my children and with enough cointreau/brandy cream or ice cream it's good as a Christmas pudding alternative and lasts a few days!

CheeseMaiden · 26/08/2021 08:39

Last year we had individual steamed sticky toffee puddings with a creamy caramel sauce. They went down a treat! Made a few days in advance and steamed them in our rice cooker to keep the hob free. Thinking of a Yule log this year, just looks so nice on the table!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/08/2021 08:47

I make Christmas puds from an old GH recipe. So much nicer than anything from a shop, not nearly so dense and heavy. People who don’t usually like Chr. pud nearly always like mine - not that I ever press anyone to try it.

Always brought flaming to the table, with dining room lights turned off. It’s not Christmas without a flaming pud!

An alternative I’ve made before is a winter fruit salad - IIRC one of Delia’s - various dried fruits inc. figs and apricots lightly stewed with added orange juice and spices e.g. cardamom, and served cold. Also v. nice for breakfast, and fine to make in advance.

VestaTilley · 26/08/2021 12:03

Always homemade Christmas pudding here, with trifle on Boxing Day.

As DS gets older and more in to puddings I’ll do Yule log as well if he doesn’t like Christmas pud.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/08/2021 13:25

Delia Smith's Christmas pudding here. I always make it. Three out of four of us love it. My son, poor soul, doesn't, and also doesn't like mince pies or any sort of fruit cake, so none of my Christmas baked goods appeal to him. Not even sure he likes stollen, but he does eat lebkuchen. I usually buy him something like a mousse or cheesecake or posh ice cream for his Christmas dessert.

sueelleker · 26/08/2021 15:04

I got my recipe from Home And Freezer Digest, but it's quite similar to Delia's. It's not as heavy as some of them.

YellowMonday · 26/08/2021 15:37

I've just started soaking my fruit for the Christmas pudding. I like to soak the fruit for 2 months in brandy, adding a little extra in every two weeks, then let the pudding age for 2 months. Delicious!

I also do a cheesecake every year. I want to try a rum and raisin cheesecake this year - last year I made eggnog cheesecake and while delicious it was too rich.

The final dessert I do is a pav with lashings of cream and berries.

I use Pedro Ximemez sherry for the pudding (Nigella recipe). I wonder would that be ok to soak for ages or is the alcohol level too low?

On Christmas Day , a pudding won't get eaten unless its late evening !

I have done tiny desserts in the past (when family have visited )
Sometimes you want 3 diffferent things , it's Christmas right ? Xmas Grin

Trifle (no jelly )
Apple pies made in bun tins
Steamed pudding in individual basins
Baked cheeseake with toffee and pecans
Lemon sauce pudding
Brownies (you need chocolate )
Apple vrumble - I put porridge oats in the crumble mix and cinnamon. Freeze in a bag and freeze the apple seperate .

Trifle will keep a couple of days .
Steamed puddings look after themselves

We always start with the intention of having dessert but for the DC its usually ice cream !

Treezan82 · 26/08/2021 20:49

DH makes a Gingerbread cake with brandy butter icing and me and DC make Gingerbread trees to decorate. Will try and find a link to the recipe...

TheSandgroper · 27/08/2021 07:55

By family request, it’s steamed syrup pudding here. And trifle. And meringues.

GameSetMatch · 27/08/2021 11:14

Buy something delicious from Booths, their lathams cheese cake selection is sublime! Life’s too short to make dessert on Christmas Day! These are the ones we had last year orders.booths.co.uk/lathams-delight-medley.html

thelegohooverer · 27/08/2021 13:33

We have a chocolate biscuit pudding covered in maltesers like the photo below (not mine - as the dc helped and there were a lot more fingerprints!)
And a proper 1970s trifle - none of yer fancy stuff!

Christmas Day Pud
thelegohooverer · 27/08/2021 13:35

Pudding is a whole meal on Christmas Day - definitely not to be attempted straight after the roast. It’s also breakfast the day after. Xmas Smile

Probably a tub of quality street 😂
