Does anyone know of any outdoor new year events? preferably in the Yorkshire area?

Do coastal towns have ship hornblowing erm event thingamajigs?

Failing this can anyone simply offer some suggestions?
The thing is, it's just me and DS (aged 11) New year is a bit of a non event for us

i'm trying to fill some of the days over the holidays just to keep his mind occupied (he became very depressed last year and ended up in hospital)

I don't have much money but any suggestions that just require warm clothing and a bit of a winter picnic would be great.

Hope this makes some kind of sense

I guess it would be too expensive to come to Edinburgh, would it? There's loads on here for New Year, torchlight procession, husky races, fireworks.

sixlostmonkeys · 01/12/2007 15:56

Edinburgh!!! ideal! wonderful! couldn't possibly afford it though

actually - thinking now I might try and save up for next year though - I bet hotels get booked up quickly...

I think they do, six, but there are plenty of not-so-expensive guest houses and Travelodge type places if you got in there quickly for next year. I am really sorry about your ds- it must be very hard for you to cope with. I've been trying to google for you but the best I have managed so far is a Goth weekend in Whitby, probably not quite what you had in mind. Are there any pantos that might do a show on New Year's Eve? The ones here usually do a late afternoon show with Auld Lang Syne-y stuff at the end.

Husky races?

I wonder if we should come up, and visit my edicnburgh friend, and Tamum??

DP will never agree to Scotlandin Jan, though, he is much too nesh.

But I'm going to give it a try.

Last year I had a sleppover for dd. I was preg. and couldn't be bothered going out. Parents were grateful because the needed babysitters. I told the parents to give them late naps. There were 8 of them and all but one were still up at midnight and we had a big party. Snacks and dancing, the countdown, the whole lot. It was loads of fun.Am preg again this year and I think we might do the same again.

sixlost....do they have any events at Yorkshire Sculpture Park?

sixlostmonkeys · 01/12/2007 16:23

I'm hoping to go to a panto on one of the days during the hols, I might take a look to see if there is anything on NY eve

I can't have a party this year - (I have had one the past few years, but not on NY eve) because the run up and excitement of it is too much for him - the prob in brief is he can't handle emotions too well, or appropriately, including nice happy emotions, and he ends up feeling depressed/violent
...so basically anything i have in mind has to be spur of the moment kind of thing (or something to fall back on if he gets bad this year)

Oh Blu, do try, that would be lovely

Tamum · 01/12/2007 16:41

Phew, they're on again this year

Blu · 02/12/2007 10:49

Sixlost - even if there is nothing special on, the Yorkshire sculpture park is, imo, a great outdoor day out! It is easy to get to by bus from Leeds / wakefield, and you can walk all the way round through the more wild wooded areas, over the stream, or stay within the more 'sculpted' bits. it has an indoor bit of gallery and a cafe, too, for unexpected weather!

Blu · 02/12/2007 10:50

PMSL at 'Dogmanay'!

Tamum · 02/12/2007 11:26

I know

Anyone else got any thoughts for sixlostmonkeys? Incidentally, have you tried asking the tourist information place? There must be visitors to Yorkshire who they cater for? The only place I've heard the ships' hooters thing is Liverpool, where it was impressive but quite short-lived.

filthymindedvixen · 02/12/2007 11:28

god sixlostmonkeys come and see us - I hate New Year! We never have a babysitter and everyone else seems to go away...

sixlostmonkeys · 02/12/2007 21:38

same here filthy, all friends go away and stay with relatives etc.

Blue - I've put the sculpture park on my list of possibles - there doesn't appear to be any NY event tho.

tamum - I think I shall take your advice and maybe pop along to the library - they usually have lots of leaflets for events, maybe they will have some local events.... I've been told there is a carol concert event in the park nearby so maybe there will be something similar for NY (fingers crossed)

thanks for all your help
