We bought my dd 'Quick Chess' for his 6th birthday in November. It cost between £10 & £12 from amazon and we're all hooked. There are fights as to who gets to play between me, dh, ds & dd (9). None of us can play chess. You work thru a series of levels (about 10 in all i think) each introducing a different piece and how it can move. SO the first game is just played with pawns, the next game is pawns and a king and so on. We're only at game three at moment but it's brill and i'd really recommend it.

hmm, there not that much to pick up to play chess. My dds both got it age 5. As did i....but i suppose!

thanks for the recommendation
my boys ADORE anything to do with "levels"

will look it up

charliecat you are a big show off and clearly hot-housing your daughters. Have they no Barbies to dress up?

charliecat · 01/12/2007 15:09

No they havent...my friends little boy, who never sits still for anything, hes 8. he picked it up in one game too and sat for an hour playing me...then went on to play my dd and she whipped his ass, tho he totally had the pieces sussed. As did her 9 year old dd. So not just my dds theres only ...er..6 or 7 pieces to learn?

do you recreat the moves your children make on a big board on the wall with a hook and cardboard cut out chess pieces on velcro. Or some such. So the rest of the family can see the tense game play?

I do that with Connect Four.

charliecat · 01/12/2007 15:18

Connect Four...whats that?

suzywong · 01/12/2007 15:19

It's for noddies. Not even on your radar.

Hey, have you ever seen Chinese Chess? Now that looks hardcore.

charliecat · 01/12/2007 15:46

No I havent...any good do you know?

DS1 first learned Chess this way, and even now it's a useful way to improve his technique with particular pieces. So you could play a game with just pawns, King, and bishops for example.

I'm useless though - I know the rules, but my brain can't be bothered to think.

ds1/dh are getting a joint present of a Chess Clock this year - with the aim of playing some speed games as games take a very long time atm!
