Harry Potter gifts - which are the best ( recent child convert!)

Hi everyone

My two DSs have very belatedly got into Harry Potter ( one is 9 but a young 9 as ADHD and the other nearly 7).

This brings me great joy as it’s a new source of gifts Grin. However given there are so many Harry Potter themed stuff just wondered if anyone had any recommends for the best ones they’ve found so far ( and the ones to avoid!).

Lego!

Lots of new kits (released in the last 2.5 years or so), and older stuff (pre about 2010), still massively sought after.

The M&S dressing gowns are brilliant and look just like the Hogwarts robes - just make sure you get the house that your child likes. A few years ago Primark did some fairy lights that looked like little potions bottles. I’ve got some in my Harry Potter cupboard that I built under the stairs and I think they look fab.

This thread is so helpful! My DD (8) has read all the HP books including all the extra ones. However she has only seen the first film. Is it still worth a trip to the studios? I know she would be delighted if she got a ticket as a Christmas present but I wouldn't want to do it twice if it would actually be better if she did it after she watched all the films. Also she tends to be fine with scary books, but not with scary films - is the studio experience likely to frighten her?

Beakerandbungle · 21/08/2021 14:22

@BikeRunSki - that is sort of what I thought but his classmates seemed to get into it 2 years ago.

Dd has just had the talking sorting hat for her birthday which she loves and also some really nice Gryffindor clothing from M&S

ThePontiacBandit · 21/08/2021 14:36

DD has recently got into it too. She has and loves Harry Potter Dobble (hours of fun), this dress Potter Hogwarts Houses Girl's Skater Dress [[https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B074W8HXJ2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_PS3MGZ42C2KR17VR5GHX?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 from Amazon]] I would suggest sizing up. It’s flared and she says it’s very comfortable. I’ve already bought it in the size up! I think DD would like an Oodie with a HP theme. I got a plain Oodie recently and it’s incredibly soft - I’m Autistic and I love mine. It’s like wearing a cuddle.

Beakerandbungle · 21/08/2021 14:54

That’s interesting re the oodie @ThePontiacBandit - my eldest is also very sensory ( as part of his ADHD) so good to know they are properly soft

No real point in going to the studios unless you’ve seen all the films. There is a lot of stuff there from all the films, which makes a lot more sense if you understand the context.

If they like board games, Harry Potter Clued is really good.

I wasn't impressed with HP Labyrinth though. The pictures are too small.

thelegohooverer · 21/08/2021 15:13

The Lego is great assuming you have a Lego fan. If not, they might find it frustrating to play with as bits tend to fall off.

The light painting wand and invisibility cloak were one week wonders. They get played with a bit now and then but mine can’t be bothered with the tech side so they are just an expensive cloak and wand for role play.

The wand with the feather and the flying snitch were both a waste.

The sweets were ok but not worth the money.

Clothes and bedding have been well worn and treasured.

One year every single child in dd’s class (mixed) wore a HP costume of some kind on world book day. It was hilarious that they’d just swopped one school uniform for another.

Plenty of time for her to watch at least the second and third movie before Christmas.

There are a couple of scary bits but there are signs for you to bypass them if you’re with nervous children, and you’d only be missing out a very small portion if you did that.

Teaandscone · 21/08/2021 15:26

Stephen Fry reading the books on audible. Long journeys will never be a problem again!

fantastaballs · 21/08/2021 15:27

I bought my sister (age 25) a pop up Harry potter book on Amazon for about £15 and she said it's the best present she has ever got. The pop ups are AMAZING!! So detailed and intricate.

Get them onto pottermore and let them do the quizzes to find out what house they are in, what their patronus is etc. I am obviously a gryfindor and my patronus is a killer whale

Namechangenumber23 · 21/08/2021 15:36

My lad is now grown up but when was younger we had bought a cape/glasses wand set which lasted ages but I bought a normal grey school jumper for a few quid and bought an embroidered patch of his chosen house on ebay, that way when he grew out of it it was easy to unpick and pop it on the next size on. Plenty of ebay and Amazon sellers also do house ties too.

Scholastic do Harry Potter activity books called "Scratch Magic" which my nephew and niece very much enjoy.

There's also a book/wand set on the Marauders map available that looks good.

FionnulaTheCooler · 21/08/2021 18:16

I've just ordered DD a lovely Ravenclaw hoodie and leggings set from M&S for her birthday, thanks to this thread.

Candlesonthetable · 21/08/2021 18:36

@BikeRunSki and @NeverTalkToStrangers thanks both - definitely something to think about! Maybe next Christmas, or her 9th birthday.

ChickenSchnitzel · 21/08/2021 22:01

Sorry to jump on this thread but does anyone know when tickets for HP World might br released for next year? My DC would love it but tickets only go up to December on the website.

belhaven · 21/08/2021 22:20

We LOVE the Jim Kay illustrated HP books in our house!

AliceMcK · 22/08/2021 00:02

My 9 & 7yos love HP, even my 4yo dose, they have been into it for a few years. What they already have, 2 sets of HP trivial pursuit questions, a HP electronic quiz game, pictopia game, lots of HP Lego, duleing wands, costumes, plush toys, we have a number of books, some on spells, marauders map, wand books, those scratch books, dolls, backpack, pencil cases and loads of stationery. They love getting the hp Lego grab bags and like collecting all the characters.

My 7yo wants an invisibility cloak for Christmas which I’ve bought her. I’ve also bought HP house pens & note books from primark, bought a few other bits but they are for girls. I’ve bought quill writing sets from wish, not sure how good they will be but they look good in the boxes. I have got some HP storage box’s & Tom riddle diaries from Aldi, I also got a wooden 3D Dobby. I’m going to buy a proper Dobby but that’s for me 😁

You can also check out the HP fan groups on FB they are loads of ideas.

The trivial pursuit questions live on our dining table and we ask HP questions around the table at dinner time. We also do the HP quizz on audible each day.

You will find absolutely loads of HP stuff around especially close to Christmas.

Also as someone else has said the audible books are great for car journeys or even at home, my oldest listens to them in her room at night before going to sleep.

Beakerandbungle · 22/08/2021 10:47

Thanks everyone.

The audible books read by Stephen Fry are actually what has got them into Harry Potter!

Forgot to mention in my previous post that much closer to Christmas M&S has a range of HP themed sweets and chocolate - wands, chocolate frogs, golden snitch and even a huge Sorting Hat! Or they did last year.

BikeRunSki · 22/08/2021 11:03

I agree with @Shufflebumnessie, HO themed stuff seems to explode in the shops near Christmas .

GuyFawkesDay · 22/08/2021 11:06

For a big gift my two have loved the Kano coding wand. It's fantastic for teaching computing HP style

Workyticket · 22/08/2021 11:16

Ds loves Harry Potter - he's 9. We did the studio tour last month and he still talks about it every day

He loves the lego and we've listened to Stephen Fry reading the books on a loop since lockdown 1.

He has a Gryfindor cushion that I bought on the tour which he adores and the Trivial Pursuit questions are also a staple in our house.

I wasn't a fan - I've only got into it since ds showed an interest but I enjoy it all now.

I het out of isolation today after covid so might walk into town to visit primark

I’ve just had an email from H&M promoting their new Hogwarts range
