Christmas eve vs 1sr December boxes

Hi all. Just wondering what others do as my two boys are only little (3 and 1) so we're finding our way wirh christmas traditions. Last year I did an Xmas eve box with pj's slippers, book etc in. I've just read something about 1sr Dec boxes though with similar items which to me makes more sense as they get more wear. What do you all do? I mean if I put the pj's in for 1sr Dec it seems to rule our an Xmas eve box which was nice... 🙈

@LowlytheWorm ohh what is a North Pole breakfast?

yoshiblue · 09/08/2021 08:51

I personally don’t do boxes, I think it’s all too much. 1st Dec is advent calendars plus DS can start wearing Xmas PJs and jumper.

Oh, and DH is in charge of Elf on the Shelf 🤣 I haven’t got the spare mental space to be thinking up ideas for that all December!

That’s plenty and I don’t think you need crafts, hot chocolate, Christmas breakfasts etc Each to their own if you love that though.

Pissinthepottyplease · 09/08/2021 08:54

I have a box of Christmas toys (ELC and playmobile) and Christmas books which we get out on the 1st of December each year. My children get new PJs and a new book on Christmas Eve from their Christmas fairy.

Pissinthepottyplease · 09/08/2021 08:58

My top tip for little kids is to have a late night Christmas movie or ceebies Panto night at some time in December. Have dinner and bath early and then have a carpet picnic in front of the tree and TV show and then put them to bed only 30 mins later. They think they’ve been up until midnight and think it’s amazing.

DD is only 19 months, but last year we start to "build up" our December 1st box.

It included:
The night before Christmas book she had gotten the year before
Christmas pyjamas - to get plenty of wear out of them in the run up
Small chocolates - eaten periodically throughout December
Her Jellycat elf - rather than elf on the shelf
Her advent calendar - last year it was a wrapped Christmassy book every 4 or 5 days which will now arrive in the December box

This year it will also include her plate to leave out for Santa that we made last December, homemade tickets for her visit to Santa at a local farm & a small cuddly toy, along with a new festive book & some kind of craft for her age

Her birthday is 18th December so I thought a Christmas Eve box would be too much (her 3 cousins also have their birthdays in the 10 days before Christmas! So it's pretty chaotic!)

I dont understand the 'get more wear' thing?

You can wear xmas PJs all through winter, doesnt matter if its given on the 1st or the 24th they should get months worth of wear. I mean they are PJs no one outside of your household sees them so even if you get xmas themed ones its fine (I rarely get xmas theme though just new PJs in general).

We do xmas eve because the whole point of the box really is a wind down to prep excited children for bed on xmas eve night.

Ours has a cool 'supper' (for them to eat before bed), PJs, bath stuff, toothbrush, book, hot chocolate etc... xmas eve has sort of been like that since my parents where little (as far back as the boomer generation it was fairly common to get your new sleepwear on xmas eve).

I also dont think it can be 'too much', I hear loads of people say 'they dont need gifts on xmas even when they get them on xmas day' but to me nothing in the xmas eve box is a gift.

I would never 'gift' a kid shower gel or a toothbrush or PJs and we feed our children everynight we just tend to get something 'funkier' on xmas eve lol

I find books are in general more a educational tool for children than 'gifts'.

LowlytheWorm · 09/08/2021 09:37

@Zzzzfthg a festive themed breakfast. Loads of ideas online.

@mam0918 you heathen! Xmas pjs can NOT be worn out with the month of December!!!

flowerpotmike · 09/08/2021 09:42

We kind of do both, I say kind of because neither is in an actual box.
On the nearest Friday to 1st Dec I do the launch of advent day, where I put on the Christmas duvet covers, get out the box of Christmas stickers and activity books, hang up the fabric advent calenders, get out the Christmas mugs, box of Christmas books and any Christmas clothing that still fits from.previous year.
This is all stuff that we've built up over the years none of it is used just for one year, some years I'll add to it eg a new book some years I don't. None of it is a present.
On Christmas eve we have a party tea and then watch a film. The children are given new winter pjs (not Christmassy ones) as a present to wear when the film is on. I started doing it as a way to get them into bed quicker when they were little.

ItsAllBlahBlahBlah · 09/08/2021 09:43

Haha just to be clear my eldest still wears his christmas pj's, I just meant they don't get much wear for the christmas period but I get that I probably just need to get them out sooner! Great ideas on here thanks

We've always done the Christmas Eve boxes, and as they're 13 and 11 now I wouldn't change it. 1st December they have their bedroom trees and Christmas bedding though.

mogtheexcellent · 09/08/2021 09:54

We get the christmas books, DVDs and PJs out on Dec 1st. Its in a plastic box in the loft so no fancy personalised special thing, it just a box that comes down with all the decorations.

The PJs are always a gift from father Christmas the year before (he get the elves to make a size bigger so DC can use them for next year).

The milk frother is out for hot choc all year round.

MrsMiddleMother · 09/08/2021 09:55

We do a 1st December box, it's really all the things I would get anyway but put into a box. So Christmas crafts, sweets, themed colouring, something to bake and matching Xmas pj's x

BiddyPop · 09/08/2021 10:12

I sort of do both.

Around 1st Dec, the advent calendar comes out (we have a reusable one) and my box of Christmas books and dvds. These have been gathered over years, and are a mix of short kiddie books and larger bedtime stories, cartoons and movies, Some are kid friendly while a few are more adult (eg Die Hard as well as Home Alone). When dd was younger, I also brought out a shoe box filled with strips of different coloured paper and tape, which she could make into paper chains for when we decorated. I usually also bring home from the storage unit a handful of Christmas mugs and a fleece blanket with Santa flying on it, and DD's Christmas duvet set. All things we've had for years (and a few pre-dated DD).

On 24th, in the evening after dinner, we light the Christmas candle and then the Christmas Eve box comes out. This holds new PJs for all 3 of us (DH, DD and I), which sometimes are festive but often not. Some years, there might be slippers or fluffy socks as well. It also holds a seasonal ale for DH and nice hot chocolate for dd and I (the lump of chocolate on a wooden spoon type, and mine sometimes has a little container of alcohol stuck into it).

But it also contains a number of items that are reused every year - DD's stocking, her plastic Santa plate and glass (from when she was a toddler) for Santa's snack, and the family copy of "Twas the night before Christmas" which is our traditional bedtime story on Christmas Eve.

1st Dec items just come home in boxes/bags from storage, there is no chest involved.

24th Dec items go into a cardboard box that was a wrapping for a present years ago - we use it to hold the books/dvds most of the year but it changes on 24th to being the hamper, and then back to being storage again.

mamatoTails · 09/08/2021 11:05

We changed last year from Xmas Eve box to December 1st...just made more sense having the Xmas pyjamas at the beginning of the month, rather than just wearing them for one night before!
It just made the month more exciting!

@mam0918 for me the "get more wear thing" means an extra month of wear. DD still wore her Christmassy pyjamas from last year until they no longer fit her (around March/April time)

It doesn't necessarily mean they only wear them in December

Jumpingintosummer · 09/08/2021 11:20

Our elves (who do nothing other than bring treats) arrive on whatever day the school fete is (usually last Sunday in Nov) with Christmas jumpers/tops/dresses to be worn.

On December 1st the elves bring Christmas pyjamas plus advent calendars and I put out the Christmas bedding, crockery and activity reusable calendar.

On Christmas Eve the elves bring a hamper. It contains pyjamas for all (non festive but themed), chocolate and marshmallows for hot choc, a snow fairy bath bomb for each child and a candle. Plus a battered copy of our favourite Christmas Eve book.

When the kids are going to bed the elves are sat in the hamper ready to hitch a ride home with Father Christmas that night.

I should point out one of the kids is now 20 and we have done the same thing for most of their lives, only the elf was formally ‘Christmas magic’. Said elves appeared thanks to my mother in 2011!

Aww such lovely ideas 😍

We have Christmas Eve family box with new PJs, slippers & dressing gown for dc & my Christma/winter ones that I use each winter. We have a copy of TNBC, a small new game and a snack each. Throughout the month I bring out other things as part of our advent, so new decoration on the day we dress the tree, books out on another, crafts spread throughout etc. A few things we get out earlier - outdoor winter decorations, hot chocolate mugs, indoor snowballs etc come out for the start of winter. The build up is a huge part of the magic for us & keeping it little & often helps to avoid major overexcited meltdowns on the 25th + also remind us that it's not just about getting gifts 🤣

Hadenough21 · 09/08/2021 12:20

I don’t do a ‘box’ as such but I buy them some Christmas pj’s each year but they start wearing them from 1st December, I don’t see the point in just getting them on Christmas Eve! We have a big collection of Christmas books which I put away all year and again get them out late November/1st Dec, they love it when the books come out. On Christmas Eve we’ve developed a bit of a tradition of baking biscuits. I wouldn’t really know what to put in a box to be honest, we don’t buy dvds as we’ve got Netflix / Disney+ / sky, there’s always hot chocolate in the cupboard and like I say they get their pjs early. I wouldn’t want to give them any toys etc as they get plenty of presents the next day. Just find what works for you but don’t feel pressure to create a box, it’s not essential!

Treezan82 · 09/08/2021 15:49

Last year I did Dec 1st boxes and they were so much better than xmas eve boxes for us. Mine will be 3 and 5 this year. I put in a selection of Christmas books, Christmas jumpers and pyjamas, a Christmas puzzle and colouring book, advent calenders, plus hot chocolate and marshmallows for Christmas Eve. The books and puzzle will be re-used this year. So tempted by Christmas bed linen this year but may be a step too far 😂

lachy · 09/08/2021 16:43

I do a 1st December box for DD which contains the following:

Christmas Pyjamas
Christmas Jumper
Christmas Socks
Christmas Mug and Plate
Hot Chocolate Sachets and mini marshmallows
A Christmas Craft Kit
Advent Calendar
Christmas Books
Christmas DVDs

The only thing I buy new each year is Pyjamas, Jumper and Socks, and I generally buy these off ebay or in the sales.

I also change our bedding to the Christmas bedding on 1st Dec.

Pegasusmail · 09/08/2021 16:48

I don't do a box or anything but I change their duvets over to their Christmas ones (got on aldi years ago) and put out their advent calendar and Christmas pjs on the 1st.

Also have little tree in their room with their (ghastly) tree decorations including a pizza and burger and homemade stuff

I also put out their Christmas books
Grin

Pegasusmail · 09/08/2021 16:51

Also have Christmas cereal bowls and jumpers and mugs Grin
Nothing cost very much and brings great fun to the house. Except for elf.. That's not much fun as you just get into bed and realise you haven't moved him after spending what's seems like an eternity turning out lights.

HungryHippo11 · 09/08/2021 17:06

One thing I’d say is to try to buy nicer quality and add to it each year rather than b and m plastic tat that breaks and needs replaced each year.
Yes please. One year of no crap from B&M would make the world a better place 🤣
