Are you making or buying your childs nativity costume?

It's dd's preschool nativity in two weeks and just wondered if she will look out of place in a home made outfit?

She is an inn keeper So was thinking trousers/sheet/some kind of belt/bit of material for the head? possibly something in pink or pinkish

When we went to her preschool easter bazaar they had a bonnet parade. ALL the parents, as far as I could make out, had made the bonnet/hat themselves. So i'm thinking that maybe they'll all buy something. DD's hat was made by her (apart from me cutting some shapes and sticking them altogether to form a hat). BUT she did win the girls side of the competition [smug]

Anyway, would appreciate thoughts please. Apologies is this has been done already

DS is an Egyptian, so I have bought the outfit.

Do I look like I have time to make a costume.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 28/11/2007 18:08

Sorry was at school not you.

TellusMater · 28/11/2007 18:10

If they (and not their DC) made a bonnet, they'll make a costume - but it will be fabulous .

I'm making my DC's, because I like dressmaking. You would probably hate me

I would let them make their own Easter bonnets though...

Eddas · 28/11/2007 18:15

An egyptian no wonder you bought the outfit

I do appreciate that lots of parents don't have time to make the costume.

TBH I think that most of 'our' parents will buy not make.

Tellusmater, i wouldn't hate you If i was in charge i'd say only homemade outfits but just becasue i'd like to see the faces not because I meant it

Eddas - that'll be great. I'd be gutted to go to a nativity where there wasn't at least one shepherd with a tea towel on his head.

I've got lucky this year - DS1 who is the smallest boy in the school, will be walking onto the stage in his pyjamas and holding a Christmas stocking (big collective aaaaah!). And DD1 is the lead singer in the rock band and needs jeans and a t-shirt. Minimum effort required!!! YIPPPPEEEEE!

perpetualworrier · 28/11/2007 19:17

DS2 is a king this year, so he's wearing the fancy waistcoat he had to be a paige boy and I've made a sparkly cloak out of a piece of fabric my mum had, with bit of ribbon attached (very little effort) and we made a cardboard crown together yesterday, but I know he'll be the only one in a homemade (Cobbled together) outfit.

To be honest this was easier than finding the time to go to the shops.

Peachy · 28/11/2007 19:18

Buying for the first time

Just dont have the time this year (DS2 is a king)
kinda making ds1's tribal outfir but its not exactly hard- jeans, t-shirt, bare feet, necklace

PandaG · 28/11/2007 19:22

neither - school provide them [relieved emoticon]

hotcrossbunny · 28/11/2007 19:34

PLEEEEEEEASE make it. Its so much nicer and gives more of the 'aaah' factor

Katz · 28/11/2007 19:52

glad i found this, was just wondering the same thing, do i have a go at making dd1 a angel costume or do i just buy one. i work 4 days a week an i'm not sure my sewing skills are up to it, plus how the 'eck do i make wings?

mummyofgirls · 28/11/2007 19:59

I have an angel situation too - would love to have a go at making but don't know where to start!

Eddas · 28/11/2007 22:33

an angel just needs a white sheet with a tinsel belt and a halo made from a wire with tinsel and maybe a hairband to put it on the head

I think i will make it, it is about the ah factor and i can be smug if no0one else makes theirs

Thanks for all your replies

I've bought DS1s. He's playing Joseph so I thought he deserved something better than mummy could make. It was only a tenner from Woolworth's.

HonoriaGlossop · 28/11/2007 22:38

ooo that's good to know Lyra! Have to do that for ds who is Joseph too.

(You going to see the film, BTW?)

LyraSilvertongue · 28/11/2007 23:00

Of course! I wouldn't miss it.

mummyofgirls · 29/11/2007 07:08

Eddas thanks - will follow your advice!

Eddas · 29/11/2007 08:51

not sure you should follow my advice but that's what i would've done had dd been an angel rather than an inn keeper

I'm goign to try some investigation at the school today to work out if any of the others kids ill be in home made outfits. Mind you I'm not buying a sheperd outfit(haven't seen an inn keeper) because then she'll be dressed the same as all the other sheperds and Joseph.

Julezboo · 29/11/2007 19:28

i made his last year, he was a shepard, I cut up a brown sheet, sewed it together and made a matching head thing.

This year however hes a chicken, I didnt know where to start so I bought it!!

RudolphtherEDDASnosedreindeer · 09/12/2007 16:12

An update for you,if you are interested?!

I have made the outfit now so have taken a picture and it's on my profile, don't laugh it's a girls version of an inn keeper, hopefully

Actually she may need some keys
