We have monopoly, Scrabble and Cluedo - all of which she loves.

We also have Cranium which she is not so keen on.

I thought I might get Tri-Ominoes for her (she loves maths) but can you suggest any others?

Many thanks

I'd recommend Yahtzee and Upwords.

forgot about boggle, which ours liked, not sure if that's the same as upwords. also had forgotten about mancala, we have that too. Just thinking, might dig out all the old games and have a games afternoon over Christmas..... I have an averagely bright 10 year old and extremely bright 14 year old - would trionimoes be interesting enough for 14yr old?

PandaG · 28/11/2007 16:06

our mastermind is an old version - was DH's , but DS loves it (he is nearly 8 and pretty logical like his dad)

Tri ominoes fine for 14 YO - we sometimes play it just as adults

I love playing games, fortunately so does DH and the DC do too.

Carcassonne is fab - played it at friends.

This is a game my DD has loved since she was about the same age as your daughter. Here's a link for the game, and a link to some info about the game. www.mastersgames.com/cat/board/senet.htm

We have bought DD chess for Christmas, in Woolworths they have a set that is Disney - goodies versus the baddies. Makes it a bit more girly IYKWIM! Characters like Cruella D ville, Peter Pan etc

It is also in their sale £14.99 (half price)

poppy34 · 29/11/2007 21:54

ladygrinning is right - risk is a good one

We love Boggle here and we also have Rush Hour which I became quite addicted to when DS1 got it many years ago. Ib fact we have far too many board games!! Risk is quite hard for a 10 yr old I think and as a girlie myself not sure a 10 yr old girl would be that into it (Squirdle runs and hides when DS1 and DH get the risk board out here - normal and Star Wars - sigh)

I am looking for a board game suitable for my boys and nephews for Christmas to keep at Grans house. It's got to be pretty versatile as their ages are 3, nearly 4, 5, 6 and 13.

Second Carcassonne - excellent game. Plays best with 3-5 players
Settlers is another very good game. Plays best with 4 players (or get the expansion set and you can have upto 6 players)
They both take a good couple of hours to play.
Trans America (or Trans Europa) are both very good quick board games which are easy to pick up (much easier than Carcassonne or Settlers.
Lost Cities is) and work well with 3 players.
For an exhaustive (!) list of games (and reviews) go to www.boardgamegeek.com/newuser.php

Amazing Labyrinth is a good one.

Carcassonne.

Excuse the plug as I did a bit of work on this new boardgame About Time, but it seemed appropriate to mention... It's a classy new trivia game with an onus on history, launching in ten Borders stores, and some independent shops, this month. I think it's excellent and it's been rated higher than scrabble, triv and pictionary on a professional games website ( www.boardgamegeek.com )

I'm going to post it on the Xmas shopping thread as the makers have said they will give Mumsnetters free p&p which is about a £7 saving... Check it out at www.timegame.co.uk - there's an online game there too.

BTW To get free p&p go to timegame.co.uk/discountcode type in discount code ess1 (all lower case.) (only valid this side of Christmas)

OK plug over

PS I think the suggested age range starts at 14 actually so may be a bit old for your dd, but maybe interesting for someone else...

Sorry, here's a better link to the boardgamegeek review for About Time.
