No turkey on the day

We're boycotting turkey on the day this year. For ease, (it hogs the oven) and because, we have it every year, and it's just not that great, truth be told.

We've had (previously, over many years) goose (lovely, takes up even more oven space not much else to do with leftovers) a three bird galantine (took up all oven space, and disappointing compared to expectations) lobster and fruit de mer (delish, but felt a tiny bit wrong for Christmas dinner).....

So. This year, we're thinking of having a turkey dinner, probably out, in the run up. Then, on the day, a tarted up chicken and roasted gammon. DH thinks we can do these both the day before, and they'll be fine to be warmed just prior to serving then piping hot gravy tipped all over. I'm feeling a little underwhelmed by this, we have roast chicken frequently, although I will go to a bit more effort with herb butter under the skin, bacon lattice, nice stuffing. It's still a roast chicken though, if you see what I mean.

Has anyone else done the meat on Christmas Eve? Has it tasted as good the next day? Can anyone suggest anything lovely that would serve well the next day that might be a little more worthy of the occasion than chicken and gammon?

Thank you Flowers

@NoWordForFluffy

See? Quite clear it's in the Christmas topic. Xmas Hmm
Can't believe there are people so obsessed with C****. Sad.
CrazyBaubles · 31/07/2021 17:17

Esspee I really don't see what's so sad about people spending a bit of time thinking about Christmas, which is a lot of people's favourite time of the year, then starting a chit chat thread about it in the Christmas section Xmas Hmm

I do think it's sad when posters see these threads, pull their judgy-pants up to their eyeballs and make some snarky comment though.

So do I, Crazy. They need to get a life. Must be awful being such a bitter so and so. 🤷‍♀️🙄

Can't believe someone would come onto a thread in the Christmas board, about Christmas just to post about how ridiculous it is. Sad. C HmmWink

TwinsandTrifle · 31/07/2021 17:49

Can't believe there are people so obsessed with C. Sad.

Quite the opposite. There are lots of things I'm obsessive about in my life. Not in an unhinged way. In a very passionate and it brings me joy way. Christmas is one of those things that brings me great happiness.

I'm the first to cringe at Facebook posts that are competitive piles of plastic tat under a tree. I loathe the "added extra" mentality that people think they have to buy into (elf on the shelf, I'm looking at you) lest their children not have everything another child might have.

But on this board, people talking about some fab bargains they've found. Hit and miss Christmas dinners and tips. The best crackers they've found. Light displays they'd highly recommend. How they stage Father Christmas arriving when they don't have a chimney. Best surprise presents they've received. How to keep your wreath looking lovely for weeks Well, this makes me really happy. I find it all really useful.

You don't have too. But grow up a little on feeling the need to come onto the dedicated Christmas section to register your disapproval. Maybe start your own thread. Outside of the Christmas boards Brew

@WreckTangled
Yes, Christmas does make me sad - I’ve explained why.
Didn’t expect to be called a c* though.
Seasons Greetings, you charmer.

WreckTangled · 31/07/2021 18:21

Not sure why you think that comment was aimed at you @stitchinguru

NoWordForFluffy · 31/07/2021 18:29

I think you need to hide this now, @stitchinguru. If it's so triggering for you, surely hiding the board is for the best? Especially as you seem to think every comment is aimed at you when it isn't.

TwinsandTrifle · 31/07/2021 18:49

@stitchinguru obviously that's not a pop at you. So sorry for your loss. And completely understandable why you wouldn't want to see a thing.

I agree with PP though, it would be a good idea to hide the Christmas boards as of now. We post throughout the year, but it will really take off in the very near future when a poster (Reastie) will start a particular thread that is tradition on here every year, and it goes a bit crazy with lots of us posting, saying hello from the year before, sharing things we've found etc.

@esspee see, for me Christmas is my favourite time of year and thinking about it and planning it brings me great joy and happiness. You may think that's sad but I'd say that says a lot more than you than it does us. We're on the Christmas board, having a nice chat and not hurting anyone so if you find that so "sad" that you have to make nasty comments I'd suggest you just hide the thread.

NoWordForFluffy · 01/08/2021 09:36

I agree, Carolina, striding into the Christmas topic (which is clearly marked above the thread title in Active) to bitch plop on threads where people are enjoying chatting only shows the bitch plopper in a bad light.

Chatting about Christmas is enjoyable, not sad!

I'm counting down to the Christmas food being released by the supermarkets, inc Booths!

LoverOfLight · 07/08/2021 11:15

Lot's of people start planning Christmas now Grin

I have begun getting Christmas nestiness and I checked my old notes and the note start date is dated.... 14th August last year!

I makes sense, I suppose, as lots of people will begin buying in September to spread the cost. I'm not one of them but I'm still here already Blush

Jumpingintosummer · 07/08/2021 13:03

Like you we eat chicken so regularly it has become mundane. We had a few friends for Sunday lunch last week and they loved it as both single so never make it at home - that’s how excited I get about my once a year turkey Blush.

To avoid oven hogging we roast a ham on Christmas Eve ten just a turkey breast joint on Christmas Day wrapped in streaky bacon and smothered in herby butter. Enough for the day itself then traditional Boxing Day toasties!

Wrapped in a roll of foil and a fluffy bath sheet it’s rested and piping hot by the time the roasties are ready!
