can any of you advise which of her books are best to start with?

Or could you recommend any alternatives? I'm dimly aware that JW is disliked by some parents.

the little girl in question is 9, already quite lippy and has the attention span of a fruit fly if that helps anybody.

If she wants JW, buy her JW. Or get her an Amazon voucher and she can choose her own. I have an intense dislike of Clarice Bean but have bought them with gritted teeth for my nieces.

i lvoed JW books as a kid.

Just bought my cousin a set of 4 from BooksForChildren for her birthday yesterday and she is really chuffed.... but she was 12. Wouldnt buy them for a 9yr old.

oh no - now I'm utterly confused. I just bought a set of Charlie and Lola and Clarice Bean books for her nearly 6 year old sister. Guidance said they were for 3 yo up so I thought too young for a 9 year old.

JW is not utter shit. It's just very intense and emotional and full of suffering, which little girls love. Also, some of the characters are a little troubled and therefore do not make good behavioural role models, hence their unpopularity with parents.

'The Lottie Project' and 'The Bed and Breakfast Star' are good. Just don't get her anything with Tracy Beaker in it if she is lippy enough already.

There's a new book out in hardback called Totally Jacqueline Wilson which might be good- it's a bit like an annual.

cheers for all the advice. I've got a plan now Think'll split the pack I've already bought between them and buy a JW for the older one and find another book for the younger one.

her lippiness doesn't bother me - I don't have to live with her
