Does anyone know about this?
Apparently, if you post a letter to santa royal mail send a reply. Would like to do this this year for ds and dd, although we leave our santa letters in the fireplace for special delivery to santa, so I'd have to do copies to send.

I believe Royal Mail can do that, although you could also get a friend who lives some way away to do the same thing!

We ceremoniously set light to our letters in the fireplace (a la Mary Poppins style!) and then he returns them in a neat little scroll with red ribbon to the fire the following morning! Complete with ripped edges if they've hit the bricks on the way down the chimney! If you do it on coloured paper, the flame that it gives off is bright green too, so that adds to the magic! (This is all done under strict adult supervision by the way!)

Flier · 22/11/2007 14:49

thanks maureenm, we just leave it in the fireplace.
i'm told that RM do this for free, i know other places do it too, not for free though

We've done it the last few years. Just post in a normal post box (I do put a stamp on it, so not completely free) addressed to Santa Claus, The North Pole and you get a reply back.

I told my kids that Santa is American crap and I'll have no talk of him in our house. I hate all that commercial stuff. They'll get what they are given and be grateful. I hate Christmas.

Flier · 22/11/2007 14:57

bah humbug!

thanks ellbell

lol Cheerful

DanielJohnston · 22/11/2007 15:05

Sorry, but Father Christmas is just one great big coca cola advert and as I'm deeply political I refuse to buy or be drawn into anything American.

I'm also a humanist and don't believing in celebrating a Christian tradition.

Flier · 22/11/2007 15:07

well bully for you, why don't you start a thread about it, this one's about letters to santa, not about whether or not we agree with the commercialism of christmas, or if we believe in christanity.

OP posts:
DanielJohnston · 22/11/2007 15:09

Well! Only adding my opinion! Humph!

Flier · 22/11/2007 15:11

no you're not, you're trying to start an argumentative discussion.
like i said, if you want to voice your opinion, then start a thread.

OP posts:
DanielJohnston · 22/11/2007 15:12

I explained why I didn't tell my kids about Christmas!
This is just so bloody biased against those of who don't believe - it's because I'm different isn't it?

iwouldgoouttonight · 22/11/2007 15:15

I think some charities do letters from santa - one of my friends did it through the NSPCC. Think you have to give a donation though so not free, but you get a personalised letter back.

PS. its actually a myth that santa was created by coca cola and if you don't want to get drawn into it why are you on this thread??

DanielJohnston · 22/11/2007 15:18

Thought it was a public thread for everyone, sorry, I'll make sure I join the normal people next time as different people are not allowed.

Notyummy · 22/11/2007 15:22

In addition, in this internet age, make sure you log on to the NORAD site on Xmas eve to let the kids see where SANTA has been sited around the world. Its especially fab for slightly cynical small boys (anywhere from 4 upwards) because it has lots of technical details of how the missile defence system tracks Santa, and how the US air force has jets airborne fitted with Santa cams.....fab!

Notyummy · 22/11/2007 15:23

err..that would be 'sighted'

Flier · 22/11/2007 15:24

DJ, please will you start a thread on the subject? I'm a great believer in everyone being able to voice their opinions, but yours have pretty much come out of nowhere and haven't got alot to do with this thread.

ps if you don't believe in celebrating a christmas tradition then why are you going to the mumsnet christmas do?

Flier · 22/11/2007 15:25

yummy, thanks for that about norad, i discovered that last year but i know ds (4) will be ready for it this year and will love it! can't wait to see his wee face!

MaureenMLovesmincepies · 22/11/2007 15:55

Just a small, probably insignificant point, but I do wish people in the UK would refer to him as Father Christmas and not Santa!

I love it, love it, love it, btw. Anything that makes a little one with sheer excitement and ore is good for me and my only dd is 12! Do you think she's humouring me?

Flier · 22/11/2007 16:14

I remember being so terribly upset when I told my mum that I knew who santa was . I suppose I must have "humoured" my parents for a while.
As for his name, I suppose its down to personal choice, yes, father christmas sounds nicer than santa, but I was used to santa as a child so the name comes more naturally to me.

DanielJohnston · 22/11/2007 18:52

It's a Christmas do? I thought it was just a meet-up of people in the Mumsnet club!

ash6605 · 22/11/2007 22:23

We posted letters two years in a row to Santa, popped a stamp on and never got a reply. In the end we bought them from ebay

Flier · 23/11/2007 08:21

I'll post some duplicates anyway, won't have to tell the dc's though, as we "posted" them to santa last night in our fire place, so at least they won't be disappointed if we don't get a reply
