Presents for teacher

I don;t really agree with it, but don't want DC's to feel left out, so I bought some hand and body lotions from M&S that are £1 each.

I needed 7 to cover all their teachers and TA's and I think they're quite nicely presented and at least hand cream's useful (unlike talc etc).

Will teachers appreciate it, or will it seem unbearably tight? Does it matter?

It's a token. Sounds fine. Don't worry - they won't really care.

Maidamess · 21/11/2007 21:02

No, it doesn't matter. I really don't think Teachers will worry whether they get a gift at Christmas. Wrap it all up in a bit of tissue and ribbon, and it will look a lot more than £1.

Quadrophenia · 21/11/2007 21:03

They sound fine, don't worry too much about it. I'm sure most teachers understand that it can be a tricky time for parents financially. I always struggle, i have four dc's, this year i am going to make cranberry fudge, and spend an afternoon making cards with the children (which is going to be a pain as I am not in the least artistic).
In the past i have bought three plants for a fiver from Band Q they always seem to go down quite well.

ineedapoo · 21/11/2007 21:07

I bought 6 bottles of wine from tescos reduced from 7.99 to 3.99. They have 25% of when you buy 6 bottles so paid £18 for 6 bottles of decent wine

hana · 21/11/2007 21:07

it won't matter, it's not tight and they will love it. is very nice thing to do.

Blandmum · 21/11/2007 21:08

I think that they will be touched that you thought of them.

another idea if you have a few people to get things for is to buy some biscuits and give then to the staff room in the weeks running up to christmas.

I always do this with my kids. It gets frantic in the run up to christmas, and a biscuit to you with your tea is much appreciated

smartiejake · 21/11/2007 21:10

It's not tight at all.Teacher's appreciate what ever they are given- we never think about how much or little just grateful for the gift.

Emparade · 21/11/2007 21:12

As a teacher in receipt of a number of cheesy and horrific gifts over the years I can honestly say its the thought that counts. In fact they cheesier the better esp. teddies holding best teacher placard. Lavish gifts are just embarassing. The best gift is for a parent to say that their children have enjoyed being in your class and you are a fabulous teacher. That glow lasts all the way into the New Year!

Pod1 · 21/11/2007 21:35

Absolutely Emparade! Couldn't agree more.

Heated · 21/11/2007 21:38

I think teachers are just touched that you've thought of them. A card with a thoughtful message always goes down well and your gift is a generous one.

smartiejake · 21/11/2007 21:46

One christmas I got 11 boxes of chocolates! Of course I put some in the staffoom as couldn't possibly have managed them all by myself!

smartiejake · 21/11/2007 21:48

Just read your first post again. Out of interest why don't you "agree with it"?

Carameli · 21/11/2007 22:00

I would also add that get your kids to make a card instead of buying one. I am a horder but keep a few handmade cards that I really love each year as they just remind me that particular class.

Also agree with smartiejake don't go with chocs if you can. In my 1st year teaching I got 20 boxes of chocs. The staffroom and my parents had a great time that year

perpetualworrier · 21/11/2007 22:10

Thank you all, just checking

Smartie - It's not that I don't agree with doing something nice for the teacher. DS1's teacher has supported him through a small bullying issue this term, but she already knows how much I appreciate that.

I just think that along with a lot of other things about Christmas, this huge industry has grown, up where most of the gifts must be consigned the bin. My mum was a teacher for nearly 40 years. I don't know what she did with all those cheesy gifts, she can't have kept them all, can she? I do remember she got lots of chocs and Dad used to take them with him to hand round on the golf course

Last year I got the DC's to decorate plant pots and plant hyacinth bulbs, but I didn't get organised early enough this year.

Oops I've bought chocs from Thorntons for the teacher and TA - there are only 8 in DS's class so hopefully she wont get too many. Maybe should have gone with wine.

leggylil · 23/11/2007 12:58

I have bought my 2 DD's teachers some winnie the pooh and friends hand made fizzy bath bombs and soaps cgi.ebay.co.uk/BATH-BOMBS-SOAPS-20-X-DISNEY-WINNIE-PIGLET-EEYORE-TIGER_W0QQitemZ140181726698QQihZ004 QQcategoryZ72759QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

at £2.99 I think a bargain considering you get 10 mini bath bombs and 10 mini soaps, I also have 2 small wicker baskets leftover from other gifts so was gonna put in them and wrap up.

The DD's saw the stuff and asked if they could get for their teachers (not knowing had already bought for that reason)....

Debbiethemum · 23/11/2007 13:25

I like buying a christmas tree decoration for the teachers, you can get some beautiful ones. Most importantly it doesn't matter if she gets more than 1 (or 10), is on a diet, teetotal or allergic to things.
I am also chipping into an Oxfam 'Train a teacher' present

leggylil · 23/11/2007 19:20

in respect to the 'allergy' comment, it's a fair point to make, I must admit.
However i forgot to mention the soaps and bathbombs are all SLS free and I have the ingredients listed on lables for each individual product I have bought from the site (she's good for that the owner)and i will be including this in the 'sets' so that the reciever is aware of what is contained etc
