Sales assistants at christmas

When you go into shops at the moment the sales assistants are on you like vultures.
Went into toyrus the other day and i was showing ds1 the bikes and ride-ons and this 'boy' was practically stuck to me like a magnet. Every time I moved he moved. I was about to tell him to back off but he started trying to sell me stuff.
Noticed it in other stores as well, and if you say you are just browsing they say 'what sort of thing are you looking for?' I think the trick is not to make eye contact, that seems to activate them.

Hi all, I work at Sainsburys and can hnestly say I loathe the general public. Xmas eve we have people ripping stuff out of your hands while you are trying to get it on the shelf and freaking out about milk and bread WE ARE ONLY SHUT FOR A F@@KING DAY you wont starve!!!!

Last night on Cig kiosk and my lottery machine broke so I made a BIG sign saying LOTTERY NOT AVAILABLE. I lost count of the times I was sworn at by ignorant bastards who still queued up and when turned away got mad. One woman said 'well you could do with putting a sign up' I ointed it out politley and she said 'oh fuck you'. Nice. £5.86 an hour merry effing xmas.

seems m&s is quite generous then. for example, if i see one of my staff do something particularly helpful for customer i give them a £5 voucher. and if a customer comes to me to say how well they have been served by a member of staff then i give that member of staff a £10 voucher. one of my christmas temps got £50 through this last week.

we got a 'keep up the good work' if we were lucky.

monkeybutler, i worked at sainsburys for about a week, and the customers were so rude. One old lady was so rude to me that i said i would just go out the back and look for the item she wanted. I went and stood out the back for about ten minutes, then went out and told her we didnt have it. Another bloke got really mad that he couldnt find the beans he wanted. It's infuriating when you can't just turn round and say 'oh bugger off you stupid old sod'

Is this turning into a competition to see who has worked in the crappiest shop now?

working till 10pm on xmas eve cos they wanted the sale stuff out - oh fun, oh joy of joys after not having a day off in weeks.

I do not miss it I have to say.

People on xmas eve were a nightmare. Absolutely shocking behaviour you couldn't believe.

I remember a bloke having a right tantrum about not getting a bloody poppadom with his curry when i worked in a cafe. The boss just came out and said 'i'll do you one now' That shut the stupid muppet up.

I used to work as a sales assistant, and it can be fun, but it can also be very stressful. And Christmas is an absolute nightmare.

One of the shops where I used to live used to keep sales statistics, how much was sold by which salesman/woman. Not just a daily statistic, hourly. So they have their supervisor coming up to them at quarter to the hour asking why they have not sold anything for 15mins.

I can see M&S getting a huge influx of job applications. I think that it is great that some companies treat their staff like humans rather than robots, I know where I would rather shop. I have even walked out of a shop after seeing a saleswoman getting bawled out, no way was I buying something there.

kindersurprise · 19/11/2007 12:32

So, those of you still in sales, are you working Boxing Day? That is the absolute pits, I boycott the shops on Boxing Day. Biggest nightmare is Next. The queues are unbelievable.

I have a theory about Saisburys customers. They think they are too good for Asda/tesco/morrisons etc but cant afford to shop at Waitrose or M and S so they bring the middle class pretentions down to us instead. I cant walk round John Lewis without wanting to kill someone.

We do get Shining Stars (£10) for good service but you have to pracically get down and your hands and knees and give the customer a BJ to get one of them!!

monkeybutler · 19/11/2007 12:42

Not working Boxing Day - that shits what xmas temps are for! Ha Ha

ruddynorah · 19/11/2007 13:20

m&s don't open boxing day
