Tickets for some major motoring event? Or photography course? Some kind of book of photos/car photos which would inspire his own photo taking?

No idea really, in my next life I'm coming back as a woman cos women so much easier to buy for...

dilbertina · 18/11/2007 21:18

if he's done everything on the ground....how about something like a gliding voucher? or tickets to a grand prix? Actually, have vague recollection of my mum getting stepdad a cd of various classic cars going round various racing tracks -just the engine noise..... was a big hit...!

lilolilmanchester · 18/11/2007 21:28

duh, next time coming back as a MAN cos women so much easier to buy for!

nobodysfool · 18/11/2007 21:28

Think he would divorce me if i sent him up into the sky.He is none to fond of heights-funny as he is well over six feet tall.
He has every car photography book under the sun unless it has come out in the last six months.
Lol about the cd!Men are such funny things arent they?
Will keep thinkng.................

Don't know why that did not c & p properly, this is the text c & p'ed:

The Blue Planet Live! to bowl over Hollywood

The Blue Planet Live! - the innovative concert based on the international hit BBC series The Blue Planet - will entertain a potential concert-going audience of 36,000 at two special performances of the music from the international hit series, at the world-famous Hollywood Bowl.

The LA dates - 18th and 19th July - follow sell-out concerts in the UK, Copenhagen and Hong Kong, and will be performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra.

The Blue Planet Live! is conducted by five-time Oscar nominee George Fenton (Gandhi, Cry Freedom, Dangerous Liaisons), composer of the television series' original score and of the new score of the feature length version - Deep Blue.

Hosted and narrated by US actor Ed Begley, the LA Philharmonic will perform against a backdrop of a giant screening of some of the most graphic and captivating scenes from the natural history series.

George Fenton said: "It certainly seems that audiences of The Blue Planet Live! have had a unique and quite emotional ride, experiencing the story of life beneath the oceans on a dramatic scale, with the orchestra playing live; I was thrilled to perform in Hong Kong and very much looking forward to the opportunity of taking the show to new audiences in Los Angeles."

David Attenborough, who narrated the BBC television series and contributed to the UK concerts, added: "These concerts are not only a musical phenomenon; they also provide a stunningly visual and thought-provoking way of helping people to understand the oceans and the need for their protection."

The first Blue Planet concert took place at the Royal Festival Hall in October 2001, followed by Prom in the Park in 2002. The brainchild of Jane Carter, Classical Acquisition and Development Manager, BBC Music, who recognised the theatrical potential of The Blue Planet soundtrack, the show was developed in association with George Fenton.

Jane Carter, commenting on the new concerts, added: "It's very exciting that the concert has received such enormous international interest and recognition. This is the first time that a natural history series has been transformed into a live event and I am sure the LA dates will be huge sell-outs. I look forward to further demand to stage The Blue Planet Live! around the world."

The Blue Planet is one of the most successful factual series ever produced by the BBC and has been licensed by BBC Worldwide to more than 50 territories around the globe, including the US where it was a massive hit for Discovery Channel. George Fenton won Ivor Novello, BAFTA and Emmy awards for his score for the original eight-episode TV series.

The show is going round the big arenas early next year

Right this is going to sound tragic but I have been making my dh a scrapbook of all the cars and scooters he has owned and restored using some rather amusing pics of him with flares and platforms lmao.
I have done it in the most sophisticated manner as you might expect and it will commemorate 30 years of driving this year.
No frills or fuss but each page is themed in relation to the age of the car and/or when he was driving it.
He restores classics as a hobby and so have lots of pics of the stages etc to use.
Best thing is,I can get my dd1 who is 7 to do some with me so it has been a great bonding thingy.
It is a dark brown leather albulm with a pic of him on a scooter in 1977 in the picture space.
Understated class.
The bonus is that when we have guests he will just have to get this one album out instead of boring them with a random collection of photos fished out of a plastic bag
Have you thought about getting his fave work blown up to canvas?

What sort of photography does he do? If anything fairly close up / artistic then maybe a Lens Baby? (That's the main company site, but you can get them from various photography retailers).

not in the least relevant, and not relating this in a sad way IYSWIM, but at my stepdads funeral a few years ago my mum insisted on having his favourite track from his engine sounds CD at the end....it was a bugatti at donington or something....anyway the bit where the coffin trundles out of sight through the curtain was accompanied by this big throaty engine noise fading into the distance - it was suprisingly moving!

re: present idea - I'm getting DH remote control mini helicopters that fire infrared to temporarily disable each other...would this interest him?!
