Hi all ds is 8.5yrs and is average height, we are trying to decide what size of bike to get him, do we get a 20" which is up to 10 years or do we get the bigger size at 24" which they say from 8yrs but i don't want him to be on an oversized bike where he can't reach the ground iyswim

there is a site which sells children's bikes and gives recommeded inside leg meassurements: size chart. These are really nice bikes BTW!

But having read your message again I'm not sure if you're referring to frame size or wheel size - as my 6-yr old has a 20" from this company and I reckon next year it will be perfect.

You need to compare the inside leg measurement with the frame size. My nephew is 9 and big enough to ride an adult-size bike albeit with a small frame.

oh right, he has an 18" at the moment so i think it must be wheel size, gawd i'm thick, ok think i'll be going with a 24"

Thanks for that link just measured my 5 yr old ds he is 115cm so he needs a 20" Mawma if i was you i would go for a 24" as 20" won't last you long.

20" for a 10yo sounds a small to me.

You don't say which brand, but Islabikes reckon a 24" is suitable from 7+, but Islabikes do ride small. Another example, we've just bought DS(6) a Kona 24" bike, and with the saddle at the lowest point it's the same height as his previous 20" bike which he says isn't racey enough

Which manufacturer? If it's a known brand they will almost certainly have sizing information on their website and that may help you make a decision.

Best solution is to talk to the manager in the bike shop and get their agreement to change it if necessary. (Obviously this is a little hard if you are buying on-line.)

yeah i think the isla bikes are smaller compared to some, think we will go with a 24" ds talks of a silver and red raleigh bike that a friends son has so think we will prob go along the same lines of a raleigh or similar, thanks for the info

We ended up taking the Dc with us to look at bikes. Told them their aunty was buying one for her son but it was to be a big secret and they were to help by trying bikes out. They loved the subterfuge and quite ahppily tried out loads of bikes. It's not just the wheel size that matters but the frame. One helpful assistant told us the most important thing as that they need to stand up with the crossbar an inch or 2 below the crotch on case of a sudden stop they won't hurt themselves on a crossbar that's too hig. Well, the way he said it made sense, I'm rambling!!! Some 18" bikes suited ds, some 20" ones!! We ahve done it before by taking them to halfords, getting dh to look at something boring and I wander by chance into the bike bit witht hem and let them 'play'.

Mawma, get your ds to try out his friend's bike, then you'll know if it's the right size.
