Board games for children

I am hoping to change style this Christmas and get the children no more junk!

But something I do want to get each of them is a board game each that we can play together as a family, but that they could also play with friends. DD is 8 and ds 6.

Any suggestions on games that have gone down well (and lasted the course!) in your families?

I am getting the DDs frustration. They love junior monopoly and Bingo

dd1 is 6 and loves frustration - junior scrabble - kerplunk - guess who - battleship - and lots of the orchard games .
not at stage yet where we can play all together as dd2 is not quite 3 and doesn't really 'get' games yet

just remembered another game - blokus -loved loved this game in the summer at my parents place.

Payday is quite good and you can control the length of the game by deciding how many 'months' you're going to play for.

The Great Game of Britain is really good. My ds1 and dd (8 and 6) love it. I bought it for them because we had it as children and I had fond memories!

I love Landlock, as does my 6yo.

Wow, loads for me to look at! Thank you so much for these suggestions/opinions. It's so much nicer to look at just recommendations as there are so many games out there I was getting a bit inundated!!

Actually I've just thought that 'UNO' is also very popular - the basic card game is widely available @ £5.99, but you can also get 'UNO Extreme' which flings cards out for £14.99 and another one with a turntable (sorry can't remember name) for £9.99.

Uno is universally popular. We still enjoy (and have done since they were about 8_ the game of Life, Cluedo (we have the Harry Potter version), cards, Scrabble, Pictionary, Scatergories (this is our favourite!). They have played one called Rush Hour at a friend's house and loved that too. They also like Mastermind but that is only for 2 players.
