I always put a tangerine in, as well as chocolate coins and funny socks, then some silly wee toys from hawkins and other bits I pick up here and there like bath toys, slinkies, pens, pencils, bubble bath etc.

Go to your local wilkinsons.......

I picked up 3 packs of 6 felt tip pens 45p (15p each pack)
3 packs of colouring pencils 45p (again 15p per pack)
3 boxes of crayons 36p (12p per box)
and 3 colouring books 75p (25p each)

all that for 3 DD's under £2.....BARGAIN!!!

My dh and his brother used to get variety packs of cereal in their stockings. Started when their parents were really hard up, but was such a hit with them that it became a tradition. He still gets one - from me, though.

yomellamoHelly-it was the same in our house, only time of the year my mum ever bought them.

GrapefruitMoon · 05/11/2007 16:16

That's a good idea - mine only get variety packs when they go to Grandparents!

My ds loves tools so I always get him a few from the market - things like a set of Allen keys. A spirit level was a big last last year. Post-it notes. Little note books. Stickers, Bubbles. a torch. Something noisy. Something clockwork. a disposable camera. A magic trick. a whoopee cushion.

Think outside the box - look in hardware stores and markets rather than just toy shops.

I am very mumsy about stockings it gets filled with vests, socks pants - things the kids need! i do put bubbles and choccy coins in aswell though.

Perennials: tangerine, shiny shiny shiny coin (I remember the joy of getting a whole ten-shilling-piece, so I think £2 is fair approximation), bag of choc coins.

This time: old-fashioned "scraps" from Museum of London, slightly eccentric books of mini-stencils from Dover imprint, miscellanies from Baker Ross (knocks cheapness of Hawkins Bazaar into cocked hat) - I thought in particular this Christmas projecting torch gadget.

I've got a whole boxful of stuff that's caught my eye over the year - will go and rootle and report back.
