I think it depends if there is any history of allergies in the family.

I gave my DS peanut butter from about 8 months (although was sat ready to dash to A&E if anything happened!) - but there is no history of allergies in the family.

Maybe try something before Christmas - like peanut butter (or another kind of nut butter)?

there are no nut allergies in the family, but i get hayfever, does that count?!

beautifuldays · 03/11/2007 17:58

TBH I don't think I'd give it to her at this age.

(I'm also veggie and my DD will be 9 mo at Xmas, but I hadn't thought about the food )

I wouldn't give nut roast to a baby of that age (teeth, lumps) what about a roasted vegetable in flaky/puff pastry creation? Have a look around the web there must be a million ideas.

I thought the risk with nuts was peanut allergy if family history and choking on whole nuts. ie if you have no history of nut allergies in the family it's ok to give nuts if chopped. 8mo dd2 has been having almond butter on ricecakes for ages and I've got a weaning recipie books which feature chopped nuts.

I'm doing a nut roast as well and will be giving dd2 a bit.

thanks for all the replies she is very good with lumps and stuff as she just gets given what the rest of us are eating, she happily eats chilli and rice, lasagne, macaroni cheese, shepherds pie etc so not really worried about the lumps, just wondered what age they are allowed to eat nuts iyswim! think i'll prob try her out with some peanut butter or such like before xmas and see if she's ok with it as the last thing i want on xmas day is a baby with an allergic reaction!

There was a small article in today's Guardian about how this whole peanut avoidance advice has led to a soaring of peanut allergies. In Israel, where babies are given peanuts from a very young age, there is almost no peanut allergy.

I thought this myself and have been giving DS peanut butter since he was weaned at 6 months, although his dad has asthma. But everyone needs to make their own decision.

My only concern would be to ensure that the nuts were so small there was no choking hazard. My currently 14m DS will probably have nut roast on Christmas day with us too.

You don't want to be sat in casualty on Christmas Day - it's not worth the risk imho.

With not nut allergies history and assuming there was not choking risk I would go for it. Re the choking risk, both my children were good at lumps and on family food by 11 months (in fact DS ate a full Christmas dinner with his fingers at 10 months) they can still be lazy - I remember DD swallowing a full chip and her eyes nearly popping out of her head! But I would try the nuts beforehand - Christmas Day not ideal for discovering an unexpected nut allergy.....
