I'd get them to put the money they would spend into his trust fund, a 5 month old doesn't need presents!

A toy box.

It's nice, somewhere to put all the toys and it will last for years, my children now use theirs for dressing-up clothes

maybe toys he can grow into so you don't have to buy them when he needs them?

ds was 6 months on christmas eve and got a pushalong walker with blocks in it. he played with the blocks straight away and started using the walker a few months later.

he also got an activity table, some musical instruments which he loved, some cars to push along and the fisher price animals train thing.

i agree with nappyaddict. some things for little ones like blocks they get literally years out of. My DC had things like 'mood-lights' or a clock for their room, which the eldest at 7 is still using (both of these) His light makes rockets and stars and stuff project on to the walls and fly round the room, he has always loved it. Very old great-granny got them a clock each, and now she's gone they know that they had this from her for their very first christmas. Awww.

Definitely money for his savings account, new clothes for when he is older (summer clothes if you can get them or things for next winter if you can't) and maybe one little toy a rattle or something that squeaks. DS1 got some soft bricks and a shape sorter at that age too. Fabric books are good for chewing and flicking over the pages. I think we also got things like book ends to brighten their rooms and a night light for when they were a little older.

the little egg box of sorting eggs - they are fab!! DD got them at 6 mths and played with them for ages! Just bought some for dniece!

you need to think about things that you want him to have before his first birthday. some of the successes with our 2 before the age of 1 include:

wooden brick trolley
stacking cups
chunky vehicles
fisher price stand up ball blast (especially good when they want to stand but can't yet walk) - I really recommend this. a great toy and very good value
those pop up toys where you press a shape and something pops up from a box
noisy flashy toys (tasteless I know)
that egg box toy is very good - it's made by tomy
a door bouncer
an activity centre (like a static babywalker)
I saw a lovely taggies ball in a shop today

My DS was that age at his first Christmas. The one toy that he still plays with (he's now 2+) is a fisher price learning table. DD (9 months) also enjoys it and I'd say it was worth the money. The egg box thingy is good too.

Last year we bought him wooden shape sorter blocks from ALDIs for about £5 I think. They're brilliant! And DD who is 9 months loves them now too, so I don't think they're too young for him. They do various sorts, say age 2+ I think but really they're fine. I think they're in store in a couple of weeks - best to check their website as they disappeared the same day last year.

Agree with the toy box idea too. We have a giant contico plastic crate thingy and DS and DD love it. DS tips it over, DD empties everything out, then DS climbs in and shuts the lid like a door. He spends ages in there!
