She's in her 80s, hasn't been very well for a few years so not interested in food hampers etc - gets annoyed when told to eat more by mil and fil. She doesn't go out, doesn't want new things as "nothing wrong witht he old ones dear. During the war..."
Not into reading - gets her paper delivered - have asked about magazines etc in the past and def not wanted. Def doesn't want a dvd player, video player etc (new fangled). Used to love a bottle of malibu but doesn't drink now cos of tablets. Always end up getting her Coty L'aimant toiletries as that's the only stuff she likes but as she gets it birthday and Christmas, I'm worried we're overloading her! Doesn't want flowers/plants etc as a hassle to look after! So... whatdo I get? Got her vouchers before but she doesn't get out shopping anymore and she never used them. Has enough mney so that Tesco ouchers etc aren';t musch use asshe can buy what she wants/needs.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Dh of course leaves it up to me.

Morning, this sounds so like my Nana. In the past, i have bought her the book tapes, so she could listen without straining her eyes. Made her a hamper box of all the things she likes ie choccy biccys, tea bags coffee etc. Maybe not a good idea for you i know, or maybe a picture of the grand (great) kids. Once we took her out to revisit all the places she had lived, many many places!! Bless her. Had dinner out, spent time and talked which i think she apprieciated more than all the usual. Also had framed a couple of pics of her parents. I hope this helps

same problem here

great gran is 87

she always gets

tin of nice biccies
new thermal vests
chocolates
framed pictures of children,

she always seems grateful, but tbh I really think she's not that bothered.

She's getting a new pair of slippers this year as her feet are so swollen.

We have the same dilemma with my two grandmas who are in their late 80s/early 90s. How about nice photo frames with photos of family in or photo album with old pics in - we've done this before and spent ages chatting about where the photos were taken etc. Crabtree and Evelyn do some nice things like scented drawer liners or tea/biscuit combos (one of my grandmas doesn't eat much but loves a cup of tea and a biscuit!). Mine also love anything made by ds however basic it might be!

One year we paid Nans hairdresser enough for 4 visits and she wrote out 4 vouchers to be used anytime in the next year. She would have been 80-85ish then.

bogie · 26/10/2007 09:35

Were getting dp nan and grandad a digital photo frame with loads of family pictures on it there going cheap in the wharehouse near us but if you don't want to spend alot split it with another member of the family

JoBangles · 26/10/2007 09:44

What about taking her out to see a show or something like that?

Leslaki · 29/10/2007 19:38

Why is it you worrying about it and not your husband?

bettythebuilder · 29/10/2007 19:58

crashing in late (as usual ) to suggest aGet Well Wheel which has a dial to keep track of medicine times.
I gave one to dh's gran, and she's giving them to her neighbours (sheltered housing!) for Christmas.

(also unsure what exactly a digital photo frame is )

I think all the oldies like chocolate. It's always a winner

colditz · 29/10/2007 20:04

A nice tin of chocolate shortbread biscuits ...

Will also seriously up her calorie intake without making her feel overloaded.

littledRACHula · 29/10/2007 20:06

My grandmother wanted totes socks last year, as she had very bad feet.

She also appreciates audio books, as she can listen to them whenever.

We also got her a personalised calendar pf the dds for her birthday and she adored that. Means she can show off to her friends!

nappyaddict · 30/10/2007 15:20

how much did you want to spend?

BettyBatShapedSpaghetti · 30/10/2007 15:22

Bird table or bird feeders for the garden so she can sit and watch them?

lilospell · 30/10/2007 16:08

Like the hairdresser idea. Or someone who can come to the house and give her a pedicure and manicure?

chocolateshoes · 30/10/2007 16:14

my nan is 91 and gdad 96 - always struggle with ideas. Love the hairdresser one for nan - brilliant. Slight hi-jack here but any ideas for Gdad?

mellyonion · 02/11/2007 10:48

hi. i bought my grampa, 94, a cordless phone for the house that had big numbers on it....means he charges it only at bedtime, and can keep it next to him in his chair all day without trying to dash to the phone if it rings.

it was this one in argos.... www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5522040/Trail/C%24cip%3D1500006463.Office%2C%2BPC%2Band%2B phones%3EC%24cip%3D1500006511.Telephones%3EC%24cip%3D1500006512.Digital%2Bcordless%2Bsingle%2Bhandse ts.htm

also, i get him a nice photographic calendar every year of local sights.....he can't get out now, but likes to see how things are changing over time.
piccies of the kids or by the kids lways go down well, as do a jar of his favy boiled sweets.
hope this helps.

Leslaki · 07/11/2007 20:59

thanks everyone - gonna print this off and show dh - then he can decide!
