Who else is looking forward to Three Kings Day / Epiphany?

Who else is planning Three Kings’ Day, and what do you do?

For us, the night before, the children put their shoes under the tree and write a note to their favourite King. In the morning, they have a small present in their shoe. (Sometimes 3 presents, I’m not very consistent!).

We take the tree down together, and have a nice meal in the evening.

I’d love to hear what other people are doing!

OP it’s not hard, have a go. There is a recipe on bbc. We always use whatever jam we have I don’t buy apricot specially. Everyone really enjoys it.

We just take the Christmas decs down, but I think it's a big thing in Catholic parts of the world (e.g. Spain, some parts in Germany that I know of).

@OHolytights, here it is - hope you can read it.
And the pic.

BTW it says it’s traditional to ‘bury’ a haricot bean in the cake. Whoever gets the slice wit the bean in, is the bean king or queen and is rewarded with a good luck gift.

Thanks very much, @GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER - that's perfect. Would be interested to see the party plan if you have time and inclination!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/01/2021 13:43

It doesn’t say much, just that it can give a lift to the spirits when the new year is already feeling prosaic and dreary, weather and bills coming in! - plus the decorations are not usually taken down until the next day, so it still feels festive.
Obv. doesn’t apply to many on MN who can’t wait to get shot of decorations on Boxing Day!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/01/2021 13:53

Forgot to add, the menu it suggests is Burgundy Beef with rice, winter salad, baguettes and butter. Plus the cake for pud.
Not very imaginative by modern standards but the book
was published in 1970 - this is my 2nd copy - a pristine one courtesy of abebooks - since the first fell to bits. For many years the Christmas section was my ‘bible’ for cooking Christmas dinner.

Our fève is ancient and from Monoprix. There is a great Raymond Blanc recipe for galette des rois.

DD returns to university the day before and for the first time, she won’t be here when DS goes under the table. Few things make me wobbly, but I’m feeling weird about it this year.

kingkuta · 03/01/2021 14:32

I'm making (or attempting to make) the BBC good food recipe for galette des rois. A big group of us got stranded at Paris Airport a few years back around this time and I remember a galette des rois getting shared around and my brother finding the crown. Brings back happy memories. Think ill also make a big pot of beouf bourgignon and make a night of taking the decs down. I think I'm too late to get a feve delivered now so will have to make do with a coin!

TwnklTwnklLittleStarfighter · 03/01/2021 15:28

@Shangrilalala sorry you are feeling wobbly. I hope the festivities will make it feel better, not worse Flowers

Thank you @TwnklTwnklLittleStarfighter I’m just being a little indulgent. Think I’ll just double up on the cognac in the almond paste!

OHolyTights · 05/01/2021 10:07

Thanks again, @GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER Xmas Smile
Some more than others, we all need some lifting of spirits and more light, especially now.

mammmamia · 05/01/2021 15:21

When do you all take your decorations down then? Today is 12th night - so tonight or tomorrow if you celebrate 6th Jan?

Tomorrow evening, after Epiphany celebrations. Although we can leave them up til Candlemas if we feel like it!
