Panic about Boxing Day dinner

Hi all

I was working today so the family decided we would have our “Christmas dinner” on Boxing Day (tomorrow).
Unfortunately, our oven started leaking gas (I think, as there were gas odours) when the oven was on.

In a panic, I bought a mini oven from argos at the last minute yesterday but didn’t bother to check it out as so busy.

It seems to be working fine and easy to operate but I’m worried that I’m going to need to roast my lamb a lot longer in there than I would in a conventional oven.

Also, we are a big family and I am going to need to do several batches of the trimmings (yes all shop bought so sue me!)

I’m now unsure of whether to do the trimmings first and reheat later, or to do the lamb and then the trimmings straight after.

Just worried about actual cooking times in there.

Hope someone can advise.

Thank you!
And Merry Xmas!

Roast the lamb now and serve at room temp later with hot gravy.

Microwave everything else.

I would do the lamb first, as then it can "rest" while the rest of the meal is cooking. Cover it with foil and it will stay hot and juicy. You could also put it in an hour or so earlier (I am assuming its a joint or similar), that way if it takes longer you dont need to delay dinner.

I’d cook the meat now (or first thing) and serve cold. I always cook the turkey the night before and if I was having a big family roast dinner (10 or more of us), I’d cook the meat in advance.

Give you oven space to cook things that need to be cooked fresh as you need them.

Cook the lamb and leave it covered to rest, shove the trimmings in next. It’ll all come together so don’t panic, have a glass of wine - after working today you earned it and get some sleep otherwise you’ll be to tired to enjoy the day

Keep an good eye on the lamb. I was in a similar boat regarding a non functioning oven and bought a desktop oven. I found that things cooked a lot faster than in my oven before it broke. Pork cooked way faster

Cook lamb first -keep checking as new oven will be different (slower or faster!).

Rest lamb under foil and t towels-on wooden board. It will stay hot for ages. (Apparently Gordon Ramsay rests his as long as it cooked)

Cook other things while meat is testing or being carved.

Have a lovely relaxed day 😁

Erm... I'm not sure that food is the no. 1 priority here.

You need to ring and report a gas leak as an emergency. Please don't leave it. And for God's sake don't light any candles.

Heyahun · 26/12/2020 02:05

I wouldn’t be stressing tbh / get the oven fixed/ gas issue fixed - order a takeaway instead 😂

Do you have a slow cooker that could be used alongside the Argos oven.
