Ransacking the house looking for anything to bulk out DDs santa sack. Am usually good at this but with covid and losing my dad, I've not been on it. Pulled the amazon boxes out from under the bed to wrap, and have bought okay amount for DS, but hardly anything for DD. Some books and tops, that's it. She's 10. It's crap. I've found a small box of chocolates in the cupboard and some unopened lip gloss. It looks pitiful.

Ffs!

Here we go with the competitiveness scabbiness on MN.

“My children get one satsuma segment and a quarter of a chocolate coin and IT IS ENOUGH.”

Just ignore it!

@ilovesushi horse riding lessons is a fab idea and she’ll love it!

AlohaMolly · 25/12/2020 01:03

Does she like books/reading? Small print book shop online does monthly (I think) subscriptions for book boxes by age group.

What about tickets for a musical at a local Venue later in the year? Voucher for a meal with just you at a favourite restaurant? I’d have felt so grown up at that age, going out with my mum for dinner.

PurpleSweetPeas · 25/12/2020 01:04

Adopt a horse from a rescue Smile

Sparkledot · 25/12/2020 01:05

Your daughter will love the horse riding lessons OP. I was going to suugest ice skating ones but the coaches aren't allowed on the ice... So not so much of a lesson lol

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 25/12/2020 01:09

Omg that is obscene!! Is that amount normal?!

Obscene....🙄🤣🤣🤣 Only on Mumsnet. 🤪

jessstan1 · 25/12/2020 01:11

@ilovesushi

Yes horse riding! Amazing idea. Hope I have some printer ink left!
I would love that! Go for it.

Have a happy Christmas.

newusername2009 · 25/12/2020 01:12

I’ve had a similar panic tonight. Tier 4 hit the day before my planned shopping day - yup I left it late! Have just been looking around the house for presents saved for school birthday parties so their sacks don’t look completely empty.

Flapjackninja · 25/12/2020 01:22

Some IOU vouchers for days out, treats, takeaway night etc at a later date?

Couchbettato · 25/12/2020 01:38

One year my present consisted of a picture of a climbing frame for the back garden, compared to my brother's bike and presents and goodies. I didn't mind because I knew mine held value and I would get years of enjoyment out of it but we were 10 years apart. Might have been 13 to his 3 at the time.

I think your daughter will love the riding lessons.

UnRavellingFast · 25/12/2020 02:12

I usually have loads of packages for mine (wrap even small items separately for the fun of them seeing loads of parcels) but it’s not high cost stuff. This year everything is much pared down and they are understanding. I realised I’d been unbalanced between my two by accident as I was wrapping so held back an item for that one’s birthday. However you have solved with riding school voucher which is really lovely and will be a great memory or even the start of a great lifelong interest!

ilovesushi · 25/12/2020 09:20

Just reporting back. She is absolutely over the moon about the riding lessons. Thank you so much for the support and fabulous ideas. Hope everyone has a lovely day. xxx

Obscene? Seriously? How rude!!

These piles look modest in comparison to some I've seen on Facebook last night..... my eyeballs were wiggling at the sight of them!!

Glad you got some things sorted OP. At 10 your dd is old enough to understand how difficult Christmas shopping has been this year.

MessAllOver · 25/12/2020 09:52

Omg that is obscene

Growing up, we weren't very well off but we always had huge piles of presents to open on Christmas. Our parents would fill our stockings with "essentials" - boxes of tissues, knickers, socks, new bedding for the year, toiletries, toothbrushes, new shoes and clothes, stationery, face wipes, drawing paper, that sort of thing. Then there would be one or two toys and some chocolate and sweets. We loved having all those presents to open, but they didn't spend that much and a large part of it was things they would have bought anyway.

Our DS has quite a modest pile compared to my childhood piles - probably about 1/5 Blush. But it's all toys, books and games (and a few sweets)...not an "essential" in sight.

Appearances can be deceptive. Looking back, my parents wrapped everything in sight. I'm sure if the family cat had been wandering past, he would have been wrapped Grin.

Worried234 · 25/12/2020 10:08

Obscene???

Calm down.

My DC have that sort of pile every year.

DontStopThinkingAboutTomorrow · 25/12/2020 10:16

Omg that is obscene!! Is that amount normal?!

Yes. Actually it's modest compared to most.

Shaniac · 25/12/2020 10:25

Glad dd is happy op. Merry Christmas

ChristmasinJune · 25/12/2020 10:42

I'm sure if the family cat had been wandering past, he would have been wrapped .

Our family cat was sailing pretty close to the wind last night Grin

AtlasPine · 25/12/2020 10:47

So pleased she was thrilled. I love it when MN comes up trumps!

Obscene....🙄🤣🤣🤣 Only on Mumsnet. 🤪

All the miserable 4 gift

play, eat, wear, read people

They do their children one day off cleaning chimneys as well.

Charlie63849 · 25/12/2020 14:15

@TeenageMutantNinjaCovid 🤣😂😂 so true.

That pile was in no way obscene. I swear some people live under a rock.
