(How) Do you defrost a Bernard Matthews turkey?

My Dh got a BM turkey crown, medium, in Iceland and has taken it out the freezer to defrost this morning, ready to be cooked tomorrow. I'm now debating with him whether it should be defrosted in the fridge, and whether it should be defrosted at all, or cooked from frozen?!

Surely leaving it on the counter top til tomorrow is asking for bacteria to breed?

Happy to be corrected!

I think crowns are usually cooked from frozen - what does the packaging say?

I wouldn’t cook any poultry from frozen. Defrost it in the fridge or in a cool place (have done it in the shed, garage or car before).

It says keep frozen on the front, but he thought they were always defrosted before cooking. I'm just convinced it should at least be in the fridge but he says it won't defrost in time if he does that.

The cooking instructions say cook from frozen?

I think my mum always defrosted Turkey out of the fridge, we never got food poisoning 🤣, if you have room in the fridge then I would put it in there but it will take longer to defrost.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/12/2020 10:16

Definitely defrost before cooking! I’m surprised if there aren’t instructions to that effect.

Our small one says defrost in fridge at 4c and to give up to 12 hours per kg so I m going with 24 hours in the fridge.

Iceland website says to defrost . Have a look .

I took our turkey from the freezer and put it in the fridge yesterday morning. Its still completely frozen. Its now in a cupboard

SpamIAm · 24/12/2020 10:54

I think the 'keep frozen' on the packaging is just referring to storage, there should be defrosting instructions on the back. You'd normally defrost in the fridge but he's right that it won't defrost in time if you do that now. Just make sure it's not anywhere too warm.
