Fondant icing reconstitution

I have a block of rock hard unopened fondant icing. Is there any way of making it pliable?
I think had the same problem last year, I tried the microwave, but that did not work.

Am I the only poster staring at a slab of intractable fondant icing? Surely HollyandIvyandallthingsYule, Trumpton and Lucysmam have some helpful advice? Or maybe you don’t find strange solid objects with long gone sell by dates (but not poisonous after Xmas Grin) lurking at the back of your cupboards.

Water? I'd just chuck it and make some more, only takes a minute.

Talipesmum · 23/12/2020 13:49

I’d pat water all over it, try and get it to the point where you can knead it and keep doing that for ages. Might work?

lucysmam · 23/12/2020 14:05

Grin TrickyD I've only just seen this. I have the same issue with a block I was going to use for dd2's birthday cake.

It's currently on the radiator to see if that helps a bit, then I'll try kneading it together with the 1/4 block I also have.

Nooo step away form the water! Just makes it sticky

But... surprised the microwave doesn’t work, that normally does it for me?

Lovemusic33 · 23/12/2020 14:20

Don’t add water.

I usually cut it into small cubes and shove it in my kitcheaid mixer with the dough hook, but that’s no use unless you have a mixer 🤔.

TrickyD · 23/12/2020 15:47

Thanks to Amazon Black Friday, I now have a Kenwood complete with dough hook, so might try your method, Lovemusic33. Though I think I would need some sort of industrial machine to cut it into small blocks.
Otherwise might have another go with the microwave.
Lucysmam, please let me know of any encouraging news of the radiator method.

I wonder if you could cut the edges off it Tricky & the inside would be ok maybe? It dries from the outside as far as I can gather from mine so might be ok further in (does that make sense?)

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 23/12/2020 16:12

If it's really rock hard, could you please try grating it and then kneading it back to normal?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 23/12/2020 16:13

Don't know where the please came from, 😂

lucysmam · 23/12/2020 20:22

Tricky, the warmth seems to have softened my icing up - the end where I had opened the packet to use a small amount is a bit crumbly but I think the rest should become more pliable with some kneading. I might even try my mixer for that! Superb idea Lovemusic

goose1964 · 23/12/2020 22:48

Knead it

TrickyD · 24/12/2020 07:27

If it were possible to knead it, I would not have a problem. It would be like kneading a brick hoping it will turn into clay.

Yes you can rescue it. Break into small pieces, add a little bit of Trex, and use the dough hook on the kitchen aid.....add more trex if needed!
