Planning on Prawn Cocktail. Got the cocktail sauce already and a lemon. Hoping I can get prawns and lettuce tomorrow!

CheshireSplat · 22/12/2020 07:18

Stilton and pear salad here.

LunaLula83 · 22/12/2020 07:20

Soup

There have been quite a few similar threads.

Common answers!

  • don't do starters because they want room for the main event.
  • serve canapés while finishing opening presents
  • do starters but an hour or two beforehand
  • pate, mushroom or vegetable soup, prawns cocktail, smoked salmon, goats cheese toasts, cheeses, melon and parma ham, m&s party food!

We do sometimes, this year we have prawn cocktail. Sometimes a salmon terrine.

We don’t always but it helps as lunch always running late and we get starving!

jackstini · 22/12/2020 07:35

Chocolate for breakfast - eat the first you open

Smoked salmon canapés and blinis (bought ready done!) with prosecco around 11

Main dinner about 3

Cluckycluck · 22/12/2020 07:40

We don't usually have starters but have always loved the idea of a seafood platter for starter.

BrandyandDeath · 22/12/2020 07:42

as @jackstini said, if you're yuletiding right you will be gorging on chocolate from sun-up. That's starter enough.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 22/12/2020 07:53

We tend not to do starters as it fills people up, but we do seafood on Christmas Eve.

waitingforadulthood · 22/12/2020 08:00

I am all for Christmas starter esp with children. Effectively in our house starter is a small lunch to tide us over. This year it's pea and ham soup. Past years it's been crab gratin, prawn cocktail, goats cheese abs beetroot salad, pate and toast.

We enjoy small canapés about 10 - vol au vents, pigs in blankets, salmon blinis, olives etc(up since 6 so hungry) starter around 12.30 and full dinner at 3/4. If nothing else, pulling us all back to the table throughout the day keeps a jovial family spirit and avoids over excited over tired hungry sugar filled squabbles between the dc.

MinnieMountain · 22/12/2020 09:04

Asparagus rolls, smoked salmon pate and smoked salmon.

orangecinnamon · 22/12/2020 09:26

If I could get away with not having one I would. This year is M and S chicken parfait with posh version of melba toasts. Trick is to serve early before dinner as above and something light. Mine is really just a token effort.

I always recommend the smoked salmon starter recipe below which is gloriously light and zingy.

We have French onion soup, topped with a slice of baguette with gruyere, melted under the grill.
DC have sizzling garlic mushrooms and cheesy garlic bread.

I'd be quite happy not having a starter but everyone else loves it.

Lovemusic33 · 22/12/2020 11:02

We won’t be having one as it’s just me and the 2dc’s and they don’t like any starters, tbh I can’t really eat 3 courses and pudding is a must 🤣 but I do love a prawn cocktail.

bananaboats · 22/12/2020 13:37

Doing a soup but will prob be for more of a lunch than directly before the main course as we like to eat later

CeeceeBloomingdale · 22/12/2020 13:38

Quality street Xmas Wink

VestaTilley · 22/12/2020 14:25

Yes- prawn cocktail with smoked salmon. Every year without fail.

foodiemama26 · 22/12/2020 23:08

We usually have a starter, but I’ve decided on canapes this year. Nigella’s parmesan shortbread, olives, smoked nuts and salmon pate on soda bread squares. All prepped ahead just have to put the pate on the bread! More time for drinking a glass of fizz and enjoying the day...I’m quite excited!

Holothane · 22/12/2020 23:18

Just for me smoked salmon and soft cheese rolled up I love it. Dh not bothered about starters.

Wobbitcatcher · 22/12/2020 23:27

We have breaded mushrooms and cheese bites (normally get the fried Brie and cranberry sauce but not available anywhere)
I’m going to do what others suggested and have it casually while opening presents as I have a toddler and he won’t be at the table for 3 courses

DuesToTheDirt · 22/12/2020 23:33

We're vegetarians and we're having fried tofu sticks with cranberry sauce.

ShameMacGowan · 22/12/2020 23:42

Pre kids I've always had prawn cocktail. It got to the point where it was making me less hungry for dinner though.

In recent years we've been having a normal cereal breakfast around 9ish and then frozen croissants warmed up around 11ish.

Lollypop701 · 22/12/2020 23:48

Aldi lobster tails 😍 it’s a roast dinner so I want it to be special. Pudding is usually 2 hours after(if at all)

KingCatMeowInSpace · 23/12/2020 00:05

Bruschetta here

partyatthepalace · 23/12/2020 00:08

Wouldn’t dream of it. But knock yourself out.
