Which supermarket would be a good place to look for a Turkey next week?

Our fridge freezer has gone wrong so I need to buy a fresh Turkey next week. Tues or Wed maybe so I dont need to put in the freezer, have borrowed a fridge! Where should I look? I'm driving distance from a Lidl, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Asda? I'd there any chance of getting one do you think?

I would try them all! Just pick your first choice supermarket and go there first? If no luck go to the next closest. I'm sure you'll get one

Thanks, I will. I tried pre ordering from Sainsbury's and Tesco and both out of stock on all Turkeys.

Could do to find out in advance what time they get their fresh delivery/what time shelves are filled as you could go first thing in the morning or whatever then

Yes, would be a good idea to find out. We both work shifts so between us we could look at different times in the day.

Would you not consider a frozen one? (And put it in your fridge until it’s time to defrost it.)

If I bought a frozen one Tuesday, and leave it in fridge, it would be ok for Fri?

Tescos usually have loads from the 20th Dec. They all have use by dates of 26 Dec. I usually go early in the morning 22/23 Dec and have a choice of sizes, crowns or full turkeys in different sizes.

picklemewalnuts · 16/12/2020 15:23

@hettyhooverdoover it won't defrost fast enough in the fridge. Better to defrost it in a cool box/cool place. You can then put it in the fridge if it defrosts faster than expected.

WaxOnFeckOff · 16/12/2020 15:24

I've walked in and bought fresh off the shelf in Sainsburys in the run up. Depending on the size of Turkey it could take a couple of days to defrost in the fridge and I guess you can see how it's getting on and pull it out for a bit to speed it up at the end. I always cook mine Christmas eve so Tuesday would be the latest I would buy.

I was very heavily pregnant last year and totally forgot the turkey and asked this exact question. All the supermarkets will have fresh turkeys n stock on those days leading up to Christmas

shinynewapple2020 · 16/12/2020 16:02

I have never had a problem in the past with turkey not being available the week before Christmas but I do wonder if things will be slightly different this year because of more households celebrating separately . Therefore instead of 3 households joining together with one large turkey , each household eating alone and just wanting a small crown .

I can't see it would make a difference which supermarket used though .

Littlemissnutcracker · 16/12/2020 16:06

I've always just gone into aldi on christmas eve but I queue as it opens. I've never had a problem getting a turkey.

SpamIAm · 16/12/2020 16:16

Frozen ones take a few days to defrost so that'll be fine if you can't find a fresh one.

annaSab · 16/12/2020 19:52

littlemissnutcracker is the Aldi one good? I saw it got runner up with good housekeeping for turkey crowns. I was going to go with M&S but really considering this one as half the price.

Last few years I've gone to Aldi and picked one up without any difficulty, they've always been really nice!

annaSab · 16/12/2020 20:42

did you go for a frozen or fresh one?

Sunshinegirl82 · 16/12/2020 21:43

Fresh

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/12/2020 08:55

I’d go to whichever big supermarket as soon as they open on the 23rd, as long as you’ve got somewhere cool to keep it, e.g in a cool bag or box outside, maybe with some ice in a bag.
For years I’ve got ours from M&S first thing on the 23rd.

We have tried and tested both fresh and frozen over many years and even in a blind tasting none of our (so called foodie) guests have been able to tell the difference. Tesco frozen turkeys are always fine, if you bought an extra large one on 23rd, you could leave it in the garage if you have one or in a cool box outside to defrost as it's something. Like 48 hour defrost
