Hi Everyone,

Also posted in the 'low carb' section as well, but posting here for traffic...
DP would like to put together a hamper for SIL for christmas, however she follows the specific carbohydrate diet for health reasons.
Does anybody follow this and can suggest some nice 'treat' foods and drinks.
Thanks in advance! Xmas Smile

When you say carbohydrate diet, you do mean low carb don't you? I can't imagine anyone would follow a carbohydrate diet but if so just send beer, crisps and pizza Wink

I've just discovered this keto bread (MIL is diabetic and I can confirm it doesn't raise blood sugar as she's tried it too) tastes good and comes in nice packaging too infuzology.co.uk/products/keto-dough-mix

Also cheeses and pates too.

Some nice nuts would be good as well

Fivemoreminutes1 · 15/12/2020 16:37

Medjool dates
Different nut butters like almond or cashew butter
Peppermint tea
Pistachio nuts

I did it ages ago for digestive issues. It’s really tricky. You’re really meant to avoid processed foods, so a hamper might be difficult.

I’ve also found people doing that kind of diet end up personalising it a lot, so it might be best to run things by her, as one kind of nut might be ok but not others.

Here’s the gist:
Foods Allowed

Here is a general look at which foods are allowed on the diet. Breaking the Vicious Cycle outlines in detail all the foods that are allowed and restricted.

Fresh, unprocessed meat, poultry, fish, shellfish, and eggs
Certain legumes, including dried beans, lentils, split peas, raw cashews, and all-natural peanut butter
Cheeses such as cheddar, Colby, Swiss, and dry curd cottage cheese
Homemade yogurt fermented for at least 24 hours
Most vegetables
Fresh, frozen, or dried fruits with no added sugar
Most nuts and nut flours
Most oils, teas, coffee, mustard, cider or white vinegar, and juices with no additives
Honey

Foods Not Allowed

Sugar, molasses, maple syrup, sucrose, processed fructose
Grains, including corn, wheat, wheat germ, barley, oats, and rice
Canned vegetables with added ingredients
Some legumes
Seaweed
Starchy tubers such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, and turnips
Canned or processed meats
Canola oil and store-bought mayonnaise
All milk and milk products high in lactose, such as mild cheddar, store-bought yogurt, cream, sour cream, and ice cream
Candy and chocolate

You might be able to put something together from honey, nuts, aged cheeses, good olive oil and teas/coffees.

What about nice olive oils and flavoured vinegars and some posh honeys.

Wow @EnPoinsettia that brings back memories. I did it in the '90s for UC. Was on the "Long Island list serve" and all. It was so hard and isolating, I ended up really depressed. It's way more than keto / low carb etc. it's almost a religion! And it didn't cure me though I was really hoping it would.

To answer the question, if the recipient is really observant they will only eat brands that are free of "illegals" because one of the community has it in writing after contacting them, so, for example, there used to be only a couple of safe honeys, others may have had sugar syrup added (often the cheaper ones, ones made with a "blend of non EU honeys (ie Chinese)", many cured meats may have had dextrose added and so on. I'd check brands with the recipient directly.

@lovelylittlepanda Didn’t really work for me either! I hated it too. Only thing I’ve done that was worse was the Elemental Diet.

I now do something based round a low sulphur diet devised in Japan for IBD, tweaks with some bits and pieces from other diets too. Bit of hodgepodge of the many things I’ve tried over the years.

lovelylittlepanda · 15/12/2020 21:23

@EnPoinsettia that is interesting, I've not heard of it.

It wanting to detail this thread, do you mind if I PM you (if I can figure out how to!).

No, she doesn't just mean low carb, she means the specific carbohydrate diet. Look it up
