Nicest touches for a cold Christmas spread?

This is for our actual Christmas day because we are having the roast on Christmas eve. I'm thinking the basics will be
Cold Sliced turkey and gammon for the meat eaters (only two of them).
Baked Camembert probably.
Maybe some retro Vol au vents and sausage rolls for us veggies.
Crusty bread
Some Canapés and fresh salad bits
Christmas cake/pudding /Yule log
Cheese board.
What other foods and festive touches would be on yours? On Boxing day I would just chuck it all out and it would be the best meal of the year somehow (maybe because I don't overthink it!)

Cold bread sauce, stuffing & pigs in blankets
Cold roast potatoes & parsnips
Coleslaw

Papergirl1968 · 13/12/2020 10:11

Baked potatoes. I know you said cold but they’re quick and easy. Or cold jersey potatoes. I couldn’t eat cold roast potatoes.
Pringles.

I always have to diversify a bit for Xmas cold buffet as I have a DH who is veggie and hates pastry.

For him this year I'm including:
Veggie nachos
Spicy cauliflower bites
Mini cheese bombs
Potentially some sort of falafel thingy with dips

TheMandalorian · 13/12/2020 10:12

Pickles, chutneys, sauces. Some salad.

Timeforabiscuit · 13/12/2020 10:15

I'd go with pickles and part baked warm bread.

userxx · 13/12/2020 10:15

Warm potato salad.

lexloofah · 13/12/2020 10:39

We do roast on Eve then at least two days of grazing.

I do fresh pigs in blankets and devils on horseback

Last two years I have done and will do again in advance a savoury cheesecake recipe here

Then something like this shallot tart

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 13/12/2020 10:56

Rather than sliced turkey, I would chop it up and mix with a bit of Mayo mixed with curry powder to make it a little different.
Delia's vegetarian sausage rolls are great even for meat eaters - can be made ahead and frozen, use shop bought pastry to make it quicker. Also her little olive scones are fab.
I find myself craving ' fresh' stuff over Christmas eg tomato and mozzarella salad and cucumber salad

FootprintsInTheDew · 13/12/2020 11:09

Christmas food is is so heavy, I agree with RockingMyFiftiesNot so it would be good to have some lighter, but really tasty options. Maybe a Waldorf salad (retro but lovely) Perhaps have a few hot things eg mini versions of Anjum Anand's spicy chickpea burgers with her fab coleslaw? Some of Nigella's courgette and feta fritters, which are really light and can be served at room temp. Perhaps a frittata?

Gazpacho salad, tastes and smells divine, very refreshing and includes potatoes so filling. Also looks nice as it's very vibrant. Goes well with crusty bread to mop up the juices. And best of all it's quick and easy to make and can be done the day/night before.

ScrapThatThen · 13/12/2020 12:23

This is gold, thank you. Pickles and chutneys added to the list. I am definitely one of the 'need to taste something fresh' people so gazpacho salad and waldorf salad added to the list. Cooking fresh pigs in blankets is a good shout, and then I can also serve the Veggie sausage rolls warm. And possibly nachos.

Delia’s veggie sausage rolls are no doubt very good, but Lidl vegan frozen sausage rolls are heaven! £1.09 for 25.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/12/2020 13:13

Definitely jacket potatoes.
If it’s a buffet for more than a very few on Boxing Day I usually make a macaroni pie - pasta, milk, eggs and cheese mixed together and baked - always popular. The only real faff is grating the cheese - it must be good strong cheddar - but that can be done in advance.

Ditto to whoever said mixing bits of turkey with mayonnaise and curry powder, especially the less lovely-looking bits, but I add a little mango chutney and lemon juice, too. Also works well with cold roast chicken of course.

GotTheWrongBook · 13/12/2020 13:50

Not particularly for Christmas but I love a yoghurt and tuna quiche -
Beat together 2 eggs, add a small pot of plain yoghurt, a standard tin of tuna fish, a tablespoon of chopped onions and S&P. Pour into a pastry case, top with grated cheese and bake. Delicious hot or cold.

ScrapThatThen · 13/12/2020 15:10

I thought I would hit Lidl first and see what I can get so the veggie sausage rolls it us, thanks TrickyD.

I am solidly committed to cheese and pineapple skewers!

Also my buffet will include

  • goats cheese and caramelised onion tartlets
  • hummus, dips and breadsticks
  • mini avocado bruschetta
HerbErtlinger · 13/12/2020 16:19

I've got a quiche in my freezer ready for the boxing day buffet, will be lovely warm with all the other bits

KyraGoose · 13/12/2020 16:20

Quiche definitely

KyraGoose · 13/12/2020 16:20

Pate?

ScrapThatThen · 13/12/2020 17:09

Mil would like a quiche. I made a stonking lentil pate today but I am highly unlikely to achieve the same again (I never follow recipes). I might give it a go though, it has that moreish umami taste.

@ScrapThatThen If you have a vague recipe for the lentil pate I'd be very interested!!!! I love pate and can never find a decent veggie equivalent for DH!

ScrapThatThen · 14/12/2020 12:38

@ningaj here is the recipe I went off, but I used onion, red peppers and mushrooms and didn't have any of herbs but used a sprinkle of ground chilli flakes and added about 1 and a half spoons of tomato puree. So mine was more spicy tomato ish.

(I put some of the pate into a roll of puff pastry last night and sliced and cooked it with a roast - it made a delicious veggie main.)
