Trying to encourage son too read and I always get a book for the children.

He really dislikes reading anything- He used to like army books so he's read a couple of Andy Mcnab . I've tried sports autobiography like Steve G (he's a Liverpool fan)
I've tried some Stephen king (IT)

I end up reading them all as I love reading Grin

Any suggestions for can't put down books for him or failing that for me to read !

🤔 I would advise getting books at the moment as it may put him off altogether. Have you considered a magazine subscription to something he enjoys. This way he is still reading. I know from experience in schools that reluctant readers are encouraged with magazines so it's not uncommon.

I’ve seen this recommended for reluctant teen boy readers: www.amazon.co.uk/Lie-Kill-Walk-Away-Everest/dp/1910240869?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I always parcel up books with a really nice bar of chocolate so that it’s like a treat experience.

I have the same problem with a non-reading 12 year old. What about an audiobook? I bought DS the Hunger Games on CD last Xmas, which he loved, and have bought him Adrian Mole this year.

Harry Potter if he hasn't already read them. I'm a non reader but struggled to put them down.

Mine hated reading until we discovered the Chris Ryan teen series - Special Forces Cadets is the most recent, but he's also devoured the Alpha Force and Agent 21 series. He also likes Charlie Higson and Alex Scarrow (Time Riders series), and has also started reading Manga since going to Japan with the school - he's most of the way through the Assassination Classroom series and has just started One-Piece.

Some kids just don’t like reading so it’s probably not worth buying him yet another book which he won’t read. I haven’t read many books in my life time but I have no problems reading. My dd1 was a total book worm until she was about 13 then started to slow down, she’s now doing A level English lit but only reads the books she needs too for her school work. I’m not buying her any books this year as she hasn’t read any that I bought her last year.

Guiness book of records is good for dipping in and out of, no pressure to read for any length of time.
Annuals are a good idea too if you get one about something he is interested in, or even the Beano or similar.

If it's the process of reading that he struggles with, then try graphic novels? Graphic or text, Alex Rider are good -just edgy enough to be cool for that age. If he likes outdoor stuff, and adventure, the Bear Grylls novels featuring Beck Granger are good-maybe a bit young but the outdoorsman stuff might grab him?
