Is it ok to give the postman a gift voucher for Xmas or is it condescending?

Would it be ok ? I don't usually, but he has been great this year and puts up with my numerous eBay parcels and 3 dogs. I'm not wealthy and live in a normal house, but would £20/£25 voucher be ok ? Is that weird or a chocolate Santa ? I never know with alcohol. BTW I'm not virtue signalling by discussing this idea, I just don't want to insult my postie, making out he needs money from me.

I've given my postwoman a £20 note in a card thanking her for always being a friendly smiling face, some weeks during lockdown the only people I spoke to face to face were her and the Sainsbury's delivery guys.

She came back the following day and thanked me and seemed happy.

I think that's a lovely idea. Just say what you've said above. You could even sign it from the dogs, that would definitely make me laugh!

pinkksugarmouse · 11/12/2020 12:35

I like the idea just be careful which vouchers because with a lot of chains closing people are going to find their vouchers unusable. Some people argue that cash is tacky but it's not likely to become unusable. 😅

Fishfingersandwichplease · 11/12/2020 12:55

Lovely idea OP - not patronising at all, tell him to have a beer/wine or two on you but love idea of saying it is from the dogs! Sent my friend a voucher to get her nails done but did it from my daughter cos she takes her to school sometimes.

@ancientgran glad I'm not the only one who had this idea. You're so right, the postman has just carried on everyday. I have of course ordered a lot more than usual, quite a bit still comes Royal Mail.

I'd echo the previous comment about lots of stores going bust - maybe buy a voucher that can be used in multiple different stores.

Floralnomad · 11/12/2020 16:42

I just give mine cash in a card

FoxInABox · 11/12/2020 16:57

He will be over the moon with that- voucher or cash in card.

TwnklTwnklLittleStarfighter · 11/12/2020 17:05

We put cash in a card - have done for years and it has never caused offence. I would have thought a gift voucher would be lovely or, as others have said, cash because of difficulties spending some vouchers Smile.

FestiveChristmasLights · 11/12/2020 17:07

Make sure you don’t leave it out for him and actually give it to him in person as we often get different posties at Christmas time.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 11/12/2020 17:13

When DH was a postie he used to be really grateful and chuffed when he got a tip at Christmas. He usually spent it on my presents I have found out since, but he would often get a couple of hundred pounds from his walk. Not condescending at all. Really kind and appreciative.

OctaviaOrange · 11/12/2020 20:02

I've got my post woman a tin of Roses and I may also put a Prosecco in a bag too

trickyex · 11/12/2020 20:16

I think cash in a signed card is nice and easier than a voucher for the reasons given above.
I tip the postman and milkman, both have been great this year.

pisspants · 11/12/2020 20:28

I was wanting to tip the postman and milkman too but can't afford £20 each. Would £10 be considered stingy do you think?

TwnklTwnklLittleStarfighter · 11/12/2020 21:18

I think any amount you wanted to give would be fine, and £10 each is very generous and I am sure would be very much appreciated.

GlomOfNit · 11/12/2020 21:43

I usually put a fiver in a card for our postie (he does double duty because I have lots of stuff from Amazon coming here for my mum as well as anything we order) but that seems a bit tight now, so maybe a tenner this year. He always very kindly gives everyone a Christmas card early on to remind us of his name and that he turns up every day. Grin

jessstan1 · 11/12/2020 21:57

I usually give mine a card with money in it.

noscoobydoodle · 11/12/2020 22:03

My DH is a postie and would love any type of tip, voucher, chocolates, wine, Xmas card. A lot of his colleagues are off with Covid or self isolating. He is working extra shifts to help clear the backlog.

EcoCustard · 11/12/2020 22:15

I was a postie for 15 years and would/did love any kind of Christmas tip. Whether it was chocolate, wine, money, sack of potatoes or biscuits they were very much appreciated. Our postie and dpd driver are getting a box of biscuits just to say Thankyou. They always make the time to talk to the kids, give the dogs cuddles and biscuits and put the parcels where requested. They have been flat out delivering extra volumes of parcels to us and many others. Will be tipping the bin men too.
