We’re hosting this year for the first time and have a guest coming who we don’t normally buy gifts for, but as theyll likely be the only person not opening gifts I just wanted to pick up a token thing so they feel included.

Things are a bit tight so I’m hoping just to spend around £10-15 but I can’t really think of anything that doesn’t look a bit rubbish and small, or is just a novelty gift that will go straight in the bin on Boxing Day.

They are trying to lose weight and I don’t want to sabotage it by buying the obvious wine and chocolates

Any suggestions?

In my DH family they don't give gifts to parents, I hated the idea of them having nothing so did a stocking. Clementine in the bottom trinket type gifts. I'd be tempted to include things they can use whilst staying like a sleep/ lavender pillow spray, small candle, writing set, a book, travel sized toiletries.

A nice candle or a small bottle of gin perhaps?

Don't buy candles or wax melts. That's a very specific present, and only appreciated if people like them. Most people think I'm the type of person to like them. I don't.

What about a mobile phone charger? A "juice" one. Or a thermal mug? Or mug with hot chocolate?

Is it for a man or a woman? Might be easier to think of things

I am very particular and the thought of a 'novelty, odd or seasonal' mug makes my fillings itch. A candle is okay but clearly a generic present from the emergency gift box.

I would go for a book. The Escape to the Chateau hardback book is £10.00 on Amazon at the moment. I would love that.
Captain Tom, Piers Morgan. Loads of sports biographies. All good bedside reading in hardback for a tenner. As they are trying to loose weight - perhaps a pedometer wristband to track activity.
