My dc are mithering me for coloured lights on the tree next year. The idea is growing on me in a retro sort of way. What baubles and decorations look good with coloured lights?

Show me your trees.

We have WiFi lights that do all sorts of designs, patterns and colours. First year DH has ever been interested in tree decorating Grin

We're putting ours up at the weekend as the needles won't last otherwise, my two asked about coloured lights last year and I said no but I felt a bit grinchy so this year I bought LED remote control ones that can be either. So once they're in bed I'm going to switch them to warm white 😀
Our decorations are lots of different glass baubles (the only theme there being really eye catching unusual ones) and embroidered decorations that we've collected for years -often from national trust properties, etc. And some from my grandmother's trees from the 1950s. A couple of friends change their entire tree decorations every now and then according to 'theme' but I love seeing the same ones, just with a new one or two each year. I've got loads of photos of my children putting the star on since the oldest was 6 months so I'd never get rid of that!

We’ve just put ours up, to decorate tomorrow. It’s pre-lit with warm white lights, but I added a thousand coloured lights pushed deep into the branches and it does look good. I’d love it more if they weren’t LED but hey ho.

I have a pre-lit Costco Christmas tree. It has approximately 1000 lights but the good thing is they can be white all the time or you can switch them to multi-coloured at the press of a button. This year we have white lights but last year , due to plugging them into the wrong transformer thingy , they were stuck on multi-coloured 😂. We made sure we didn't make the same mistake this year .

HalfWomanHalfChocolate · 16/12/2020 08:45

@Junglepie where did you get your non-LED lights from? I’d love some traditional coloured ones!

StCharlotte · 16/12/2020 08:57

We haven't got an actual tree this year (because kittens) but have this which is pre-lit with white lights. I think coloured lights are far prettier but even with a proper tree I can't move away from white.

However, this year a note came through the door suggesting a big simultaneous switch-on in our street so for the first time we have outside lights. They are multi-coloured and I love them!

(It was a lovely event and hopefully next year we can get closer and share mince pies and mulled wine etc)

They are def back in fashion this year, I bought some inspired by another thread and our village has loads of houses with coloured lights, so nice not to see just plain blue ‘emergency services colour’ lights. It feels much more Christmas walking the dog at night.

VestaTilley · 16/12/2020 11:31

We always have coloured lights- be careful to get soft ones though, traditional bulbs NOT LED’s which are far too harsh.

All coloured baubles go with them- no need to replace it buy new. It’s really wasteful to buy all new tree decorations each year.

truthlemon · 16/12/2020 12:17

We've always had coloured lights but since LEDs I've never really been happy with them. Does anyone have any recommendations of traditional coloured lights (with PINK!)?

In an ideal world I'd like a set which can change from (traditional!) coloured to warm white with a remote control - imagine that?! A string of 1000 for our 7ft tree. I might get Googling....

SpudulikaSlob · 16/12/2020 13:50

@junglepie, yours is my favourite! Where are your lights from?

ForeverBubblegum · 16/12/2020 14:47

In our house it's coloured lights and miss matched decorations, half of which are toddler made. It's tac-tastic, but DS loves it

Whengodwasarabbit · 16/12/2020 16:07

I bought some vintage coloured Christmas lights from e bay. I love them they bring back memories of my 80s childhood. They are soft glow and so pretty. I also got some vintage glass baubles which look cute. I also hate the led lights of any kind way too harsh and I hate them flashing too 😂

cptartapp · 16/12/2020 16:13

Coloured, after many years of white lights.
Miss the soft pink ones though. That was my childhood Christmas.

This is ours... got some traditional coloured lights with pink bulbs this year in addition to the led coloured ones we already had.

buy all new tree decorations each year.

Is this really a thing?

I started with homemade decorations (cloves in white net tied with gold ribbon) because after buying the tree and lights there wasn't must left in the budget.

For years I added to the baubles, always in white/gold/green. Now we have enough, and I'm always glad to see them when unpacking them each year

Like old friends.

FleeceNavidadToEwe · 18/12/2020 18:47

My solution to soften the harsh LEDs is to set the lights to slowly fade between green + blue and red + white.
I would love to have pink and no blue though.
