Christmas cards - yay or nay

I try not to send cards at Christmas

Usually we get quite a few but we've only had one so far this year. Part of me thinks, oh great, people aren't doing it anymore, but the other part thinks, oh no, I've been struck off everyone's list (pathetic, I know)

I know this has been asked loads over the years but do you send cards? Or think it's silly?

I do them, mainly for elderly relatives and neighbours etc. Also for cousins who live abroad. I buy charity ones and send them out. I've noticed that not many send them back, I don't think it's anything personal just that people are busy, have other commitments and just don't get around to writing and sending them.

MaverickDanger · 10/12/2020 00:07

I do them for elderly relatives and for neighbours that I am also getting gifts for.

I probably go through a pack of 20 every 3 years with how few I send.

Scarby9 · 10/12/2020 00:07

Yes. I do.

I do the same; just perhaps a dozen to elderly relatives or people who are not on social media but I want to stay in touch with, We've had very few this year. Wonder if Covid is putting people off?
Sunmoonstars77 · 10/12/2020 00:13

Yes I agree @ImAKaren. Perhaps people are watching the pennies more carefully this time around and don't want to fork out for stamps. Does seem a pity in a way as it's a lovely tradition

Pipandmum · 10/12/2020 00:13

Yes. I love getting them too. I don't do it for people I see every week, more for relatives and friends who live some distance away. I write a quick catch up and love hearing from them in return. I send out about 45.
But I do seem to have received considerably less this year, which is surprising as you think people would reach out this year in particular and some had extra time during the last lovkdown!

BeaLola · 10/12/2020 01:03

Just finished ours yesterday - trying not to think if the cost once I added the stamps - 65 cards of which 20 are neighbours & close friends who I will see and can hand deliver to. Despite some relatives sadly dying (very old Aunts and Uncles) over last couple of years I have a lot of elderly relatives and I don't want to stop sending them handwritten cards. I also like sending handwritten letters .

We also exchange cards with close family although younger people where I work thought this was a strange thing to do

lillylemons · 10/12/2020 01:28

Dd makes cards for family members and I buy I pack of cards to send to the neighbours just finished writing the neighbours cards to put in the letterboxes tomorrow.

isawthat · 10/12/2020 01:30

I do them, I enjoy receiving them

PerveenMistry · 10/12/2020 01:42

I enjoy sending and receiving.

Giraffey1 · 10/12/2020 02:07

I like to send Christmas cards - it’s a way for me to tell family and friends I’m thinking about them (doubly important this year, as I have seen no one ) .I like to make my own cards but only do so for people who I know will appreciate my efforts. The rest get charity cards.

I like to receive cards, for the same reason.

Poppins17 · 10/12/2020 07:07

We normally send loads, but we have only recently come out of isolation from having COVID so decided to make donations instead to our local good causes... we weren’t sure if it would make people feel uncomfortable receiving something through the post that had been from an infected house! We definitely haven’t received as many this year either...

SushiGo · 10/12/2020 07:40

We're tried to send them where they would be appreciated this year.

End result is we're sending more to single friends with a decent long message in this year and less to family abroad.

EnPoinsettia · 10/12/2020 08:11

Older relatives and neighbours only now. Proper cards for one another.

VestaTilley · 10/12/2020 09:56

Yes- send over 100 as we have large families scattered to the four winds, and are fortunate to have lots of friends and acquaintances. It’s a lovely way of keeping in touch and we generally receive lots.

I think this year is especially important to send them to people you may not have seen all year, and to those who’ve had a hard time of it and need cheering up.

NotMeekNotObedient · 10/12/2020 17:26

Yes, send about 25 - sending more this year as haven't seen people to give it to them in person.

I don't get lots, but if someone sends me a card, I do them one back.

If I kept sending someone Xmas cards and never got one back I probably wouldn't bother in future,
unless it was family.

Proper cards for family definitely.

AuntieMarys · 10/12/2020 17:29

I'm not sending any this year at all.

AuntieMarys · 10/12/2020 17:31

I normally send about 40. We have no elderly relatives or friends and a lot of friends are doing the same.

Oneearringlost · 10/12/2020 17:38

I'm 55 as is my DH. We have friends we haven't seen for 20 years but I care about them and want to hear their news. I always write our news and appreciate hearing other's.
I'm not on any SM about from MN so don't hear about others in any other way.
I don't really enjoy sending but I do enjoy receiving them.
