Friend sending Christmas care package to me abroad. What do I need?

BeesAnkles · 06/12/2020 21:41

I live abroad in Europe and, because I can't get home for Christmas this year, a lovely friend has kindly offered to send me out a care package with festive treats. So far I have the following list:

Mince pies
Crackers
Paxo stuffing

I'm fine for gravy and don't like Christmas pudding. My mind's gone blank! What else will I need to have a fab British Christmas abroad?

After eights
Chocolate orange

BeesAnkles · 06/12/2020 21:44

We have After Eights here but not chocolate orange and it's a must! Thanks!

A packet of bread sauce mix.

BeesAnkles · 06/12/2020 21:47

We can also get Quality Street at a specialist shop but I had some the other day and they were grim. Maybe Celebrations or Heroes - are they any better?

Twiglets!
Posh crackers for cheese, the selection in the U.K. is amazing.
A Christmassy magazine?
Chocolate coins

BeesAnkles · 06/12/2020 21:50

Omg, yes, I love Twiglets! I forgot about Take a Break magazines. I'll add those too.

I've never had bread sauce but when better to try it!

Selection pack.
Box of quality street/roses/celebrations.
Toblerone
Make sure friend reads the rules about posting crackers. They are classed as explosive, and it's not always possible to post.
It's also worth pricing up her buying and sending herself, and using someone like Britishcornershop.co.uk

Thimbleberries · 06/12/2020 21:53

When you say crackers, do you mean Christmas crackers? If so, check the restrictions - in original packaging, etc. Otherwise the parcel might be confiscated.

BeesAnkles · 06/12/2020 21:54

I did mean Christmas crackers and I never thought about the explosive aspect Confused Thank you both for the heads up.

Thanks for the link! I'm sure it'll give me some other ideas too.

Wensleydale with Cranberries

Weirdly enough we can get this here at the fancy, expensive supermarket and my DH loves it! You've reminded me to pick some up Grin

Crumpets!

She needs to send it pronto.
I sent my son an Advent calendar to Spain and it took almost 2 weeks.
Good luck and enjoy your Christmas.

InTheLongGrass · 06/12/2020 22:03

Well, if you are going off Christmas stuff, percy pigs!

Were the quality street quality street (they have changed the recipies) or Macintosh (which are grim)?

Bit niche, but glace cherries were always in my suitcase.

Tinsel?

RuleOfCat · 06/12/2020 22:46

I live on mainland Europe too and always treat us to a 'Christmas box' from an expat shop (a bit like British Corner Shop but in the country where I live, so no problem sending crackers). I make my own Christmas cake and a friend makes me a pud so those are always sorted. Sometimes I make my own custard from the Delia recipe, but a can of Ambrosia is always good as backup. I also like a few cans of steamed puddings.
Of course mince pies, plus extra mincemeat for making my own.
Loads of stuffing and turkey bisto (although you don't like gravy).

Pickled onions.
Chutney.
Terry's choc orange.
Big tub of Roses.
Matchmakers, mint of course.
Soreen malt loaf.
A few jellies.
Eccles cakes.
I may have ordered a 3-pack of Crunchies...
Skips (those prawn cocktail crisps).
A few British craft beers.
A jar of cranberry sauce, although I also make my own fresh.
We tend not to get through a whole box of crackers each year, they all go on the tree and then we just use enough for everyone to get a hat. Any unused ones land on the tree again next year, they're too expensive to waste.
Quite a few things I can get from our local supermarket- principally Twinings tea, McVities choccy digestives and Maltesers. Also some decent Cheddar to go with that chutney. So a lot depends on what you can find locally.

BeesAnkles · 07/12/2020 11:25

@InTheLongGrass They were Quality St Quality St! They were sickly sweet and a bit hard. It may be a case of them not being as nice as I remembered.

Thank you everyone for your brilliant suggestions! My list is now far too long so I'll probably order what I can today from British Corner Shop and ask my friend for the rest Grin

Well I'm Vegan so for me it would be:

A box of the new Vegan hotel chocolat range
Naked bars especially the peanut and new banana ones
Sea salt and balsamic vinegar kettle chips
Chocolate chunk hobnobs
Mint oreos

pinkksugarmouse · 07/12/2020 19:24

Any space left a huge box of Yorkshire teabags if they don't have them where you are. But then I couldn't live anywhere without really decent teabags. 😂

InTropicalTrumpsLand · 07/12/2020 22:35

OP, I'd ask your friend to send your stuff ASAP. International deliveries aren't quick and the post offices aren't getting any less busier from now on!
