Aquila or other magazine

Hi

Looking to get both kids a magazine subscription for Christmas. DD is simple as she is pony mad. DS is 9, loves reading and wondered if Aquila is good? Or any other alternatives.

Thanks so much.

We found Aquila boring but I know other people liked it.

Also found it boring here. First News is quite good. National Geographic Kids??? Sometimes you can use Tesco reward points to pay for a subscription.

We tried it as I thought it looked great but it ended up not being read. The Phoenix is devoured as soon as it arrives, so I would get this!

My dds got Aquila magazine and the Phoenix comic for a few years when they were primary school/early secondary school age. Whole family read them and enjoyed them, so would recommend either or both.

I persevered for about two years with Aquila as I thought it was educational; my now Y8 daughter thought it was dull. However, she is keen to keep her longtime subscription to The Phoenix going and shows no signs of growing out of it. She’s a super-keen reader and passionate about art, drawing and literature.

We've tried a Aquila - its a bit earnest
Phoenix is ace though

Just to add, DD really enjoys The Week Junior Science & Nature and she still steals a peek at her younger sister’s National Geographic Junior comic, which, I think is aimed at up to aged 12.

How it works is really good, DS11 reads it every month as it comes through the door. I find interesting too, although it is not something I would usually read myself and I have never read a whole copy as it's too much information for me.

You are all brilliant. Thank you. Haven't even heard of some of those. Will go and investigate. Thank you!

Is this Aquila or one of the other mags? Thank you!

@IsItTimeForGinYet
It's this one. It is glossy and around A4 size, I've seen it in WHSmith but we subscribe as it is easier.

Aquila or other magazine

Same here as others -Aquila doesn't really get read but The Phoenix is still going strong with DD (9)

drspouse · 07/12/2020 22:13

My DS is a bit of a slower reader, he's 8, he also likes The Phoenix but we are going to give it a break because he reads the quicker/funnier bits and doesn't really get the drama/heroes type ones.

National Geographic Kids is okay, it describes itself as suitable for seven -thirteen ish but actually my children and all my nieces and nephews had grown out of it by age ten. Aquila did well with the nieces but not the nephews... never did understand that! How It Works was great, I'm pretty certain it helped one of my daughters have the strength to insist on doing STEM despite huge pressure from most of her dad's family to read Law. BBC History Magazine is going down a storm with one of the nephews, I've just checked in and 'yes please could you renew the subscription', and this is from a sister who I'm on good enough terms to know she won't bullshit to people-please me.

My kids prefer The Week
Junior.
