How do you get a (real) Christmas tree home?

I know this sounds ridiculous but for the last few years we’ve had our real Christmas tree delivered and before that just had mini ones. But this year we need to venture to an actual farm or garden centre and buy one.

How do you get the thing home? We don’t have a roof rack or anything. Is it realistic to fit it in a Ford Focus with one back seat down? Will they put it in one of those net things to keep the branches together?

They'll put it in the net for you.

The last few years I've carried them home, one of us at each end. They're surprisingly light.

Depends how far away you need to go for it, I know.

Bluntness100 · 04/12/2020 19:56

They are netted but you need to buy one that fits in your car.

Thurlow · 04/12/2020 19:56

They'll wrap if for you. We got our 5-6ft tree on the Focus easy, stump in the footwell

TeeBee · 04/12/2020 19:57

I got a six-footer in my Ford C-Max today, if that helps. Just put the back seat down.

VestaTilley · 04/12/2020 20:07

They should net it then you put it in the car; DH carried ours home from a market one year Grin -

if you’ve got loads of DC then one of you needs to stay at home with them to leave space in the car. Otherwise, take two cars so you can get in to the habit of choosing the tree as a family but then have space to bring it home - and yes to putting a seat down.

AlwaysLatte · 04/12/2020 20:29

Yes they put it in a net. If you want one longer than your car you'll need to get roof bars. But they are pretty narrow so width shouldn't be an issue.

Pipandmum · 04/12/2020 20:32

If you want one bigger than your car just bring some snakes and string and tie it to your roof - you don't need a roof rack.

What do the snakes do?

Hiss? Squeeze the life out the tree?

Thewinterofdiscontent · 04/12/2020 20:46

Just put it in diagonally.

I dragged a tree a couple of years ago as the garden centre was only a mile or so from the house. I got about 50 metres before people started stopping their cars to help. Always away to bring a tree home.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 04/12/2020 20:47

Snakes, bungees, octopus several names for the same thing. Rubber rope with a hook at each end.

ifigoup · 04/12/2020 22:09

Ah, okay. Thank you. That sounds doable. DH is a nervous driver and/or passenger and definitely wouldn’t go for bungees. We’ll get a four-footer we can fit inside the car diagonally. Thank you all!

7 footer will go in back of a focus with one seat down (and a kid in the other seat). It sticks into the front about 6" and I had shit rear mirror visibility though!

Chocolatechocolatechocolate · 04/12/2020 23:01

Where we buy ours they put them in a net. I always cover the car with sheets/towels before I put it in the car - makes it so much easier to clear up any loose needles and also protects the car a bit from any spiky bits

SallySaidHi · 04/12/2020 23:04

If you've always had them delivered why can't you this year? We have ours delivered for free and give the tree guy a decent bottle of wine.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 04/12/2020 23:35

I fitted a 6ft tree in a Fiat 500 with the seats down. This year I fitted a 7ft one in a focus. So yes, you'll be fine with it in the car provided there's only one or two passengers

yellowmaoampinball · 04/12/2020 23:38

We got a 6 footer in our Ford fiesta - back seat down and front seat lowered so it was the length of one side of the car.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/12/2020 08:34

Ours (5 or 6 foot) has gone in the back of a Ford Focus with the back seat down. You do have the top bit poking in between the front seats but no big deal.

I don't know what snakes are! But I really wouldn't do this - it will scratch your paintwork!

My little MG used to come into its own at Christmas, the tree travelled home belted into the passenger seat with the roof down!

I love this image!
GreyishDays · 05/12/2020 16:53

You can also put the passenger seat way down which gives you more space. I’ve often had a tree going all the way from the front of the car to the boot. Don’t attempt it with three small children in the car too though.

ImInStealthMode · 05/12/2020 16:57

We got a 6 footer in a Fiat 500 yesterday with the back seats down and the passenger seat pushed forward (although this did mean I had to walk home from the garden centre, thankfully not far from home!).

bigpricklyfern · 05/12/2020 16:57

I always put mine, netted, on the roof (no roof rack), just wrap rope round and through each door to keep it secure. It never occurred to me to put it inside the car, I imagine that makes a fair bit of mess.

NewLockdownNewMe · 05/12/2020 17:04

We always fit a six footer in a Ford Focus - one seat down, tree poking through to the front and passenger sitting behind driver! Even with a kid in the back and adult in passenger seat you can fit a fair size tree in - just put the small end at the front...

When we had a village shop I delivered two six footers in my Clio Xmas Smile
