Pudding anxiety

So for the first time ever I have made a Christmas pudding (the chocolate and cherry one from bbc good food, apparently good for 2 months.) It does contain alcohol, but presumably that all evaporated out during cooking. Similarly I know it was sterilised during cooking but I had to stick a skewer in to check it at the end. I have a terrible image in my head of opening it on Christmas to discover a layer of mould on top. Has this happened to anyone? Or are they fool proof?
It's in the fridge now, partly as that is the safest place from maurading children.
Please reassure me that it's going to be ok Grin

I think it should be fine!

You could put a disc of baking paper on the top?

You could brush it with brandy Xmas Grin

I managed to drag a tea towel over mine when opening the lid to give DH a sniff. On the back of your post I have moved it to a cold window from a warm cupboard.

I’ve always stored my Christmas puddings in the fridge, with the original baking paper and foil on, though I’ll have removed it for a sniff of the lovely Christmassy smell - always fine.

Thanks for the replies Smile. My basin came with a lid, so it's that with foil over the top, obviously there is quite a bit of air between the pud and the lid. I might brush a bit of brandy over to be on the safe side.

Ooh please share a link for the recipe!

GlumyGloomer · 07/12/2020 17:18

@Livinginatree here it is. The mix was delicious, looking forwards to the finished thing (hence the anxiety, lol)

Christmas puddings are like magic, I've been making them for years and storing for up to 3 months under the bed (def not in the fridge, are you meant to do that Shock ?) just wrapped in foil and greaseproof and never had one go remotely moudly or 'off'... I couldn't tell you what chemical process makes this be so, it just is! I'm sure yours will be just fine OP!

Livinginatree · 07/12/2020 18:18

Thank you! That looks seriously amazing!

My mum used to make a huge batch of puddings and we always ate the last one late November the following year for a birthday ... tasted even better after maturing for that long!

GlumyGloomer · 07/12/2020 18:33

Ok, obviously I need to have more faith in the magic of Christmas Puddings Grin

It should be fine though it doesn’t need refrigerating.

I haven’t made an altered version eg chocolate and cherries as you describe, but provided it was steamed for hours with booze inside it it should definitely keep! I make several every year and have never had them go off.
