Folding table for Christmas dinner

Hi all

Does anyone use or could recommend a folding table that would seat 6 for Christmas dinner? I currently only have a dining table that seats 4 in my kitchen. I’d like to get a folding table which I can put up in our sitting room for the meal, which I can fold away to store (I’d rather not have a dining table there permanently as it just wouldn’t get much use).

I’m struggling to find something that doesn’t cost a fortune but that doesn’t look like it’s about to fall over! Don’t need any chairs as we seem to have plenty of them.

Any suggestions gratefully received! Smile

I'm having the same issue, try searching gumtree or Facebook marketplace for folding table or drop leaf table, seen a few sturdy looking wooden tables there for really reasonable prices but just too far for us to collect.

Thanks @TheCrow, that’s a good shout. Not too bothered about how it looks as I’ll throw a cloth on!

Try the camping shops. We’ve got one but we mainly use outdoors in the summer for bbqs. They can be a bit rickety but if everyone’s careful you’ll be alright.

You can get folding tables (garden use) on amazon for about £40. Worth it if you're going to get use out of it over the years, inside and out

TheCrow · 04/12/2020 15:09

That's my plan too! Looking at new, the only ones within budget are wallpaper pasting tables and flimsy folding card tables so cross your fingers for me 😂

BuildThemSkywards · 04/12/2020 15:11

I can't seem to copy without it being a huge link, but I bought a '6 foot heavy duty folding table' from Amazon. It is plastic and isn't fancy (though a festive tablecloth always helps), but sturdy and comfortably seats 6 adults.

Folds away nicely too.

ElBurro · 04/12/2020 15:11

Thanks both- yes I’m wondering about one of the white plastic folding tables I’ve seen on Amazon. I think it should be ok, we don’t have any very small children to send it flying 😬

We bought a folding table off Amazon. It was more than I expected to need to spend, but it is rock solid. We have used it for years, including bringing it to parks, doing crafts in the garden, etc. Throw a table cloth over it for Christmas dinner and it looks just fine. So basically, just buy something with a bunch of decent reviews and you will be fine. It will cost a bit more than you think a table should cost, but it will last forever.

@BuildThemSkywards - thank you, I’ll search that!

this one from ikea?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/12/2020 17:51

The Ikea Norden gateleg does look good .
I have a Norden dining table (we normally have one leaf extended ) when we used to have DParents and DBro/DSiL visiting , both extensions gave us enough room for 8 ( and could fit 10)
The slimline storage drawer one would be a good add-on (eyes up empty space in lounge )

Our table is about 14 years old and still going strong

FusionChefGeoff · 04/12/2020 17:54

If it's literally just for Xmas do you have any links with schools / church halls / community type venues that might lend you one if theirs???

OulDoll · 04/12/2020 20:23

We bought one of the white folding picnic tables from Amazon at the start of lockdown in March for DCs home learning. It's very sturdy with a solid plastic top and metal legs and mostly gets used as a study/craft/sewing machine table. It takes up virtually no space when not in use and we honestly didn't realise just how much we would use it. There were different sizes.

OulDoll · 04/12/2020 20:25

I think it was listed as heavy duty.

ElBurro · 04/12/2020 21:45

Loads of great suggestions thanks everyone- the Costco one looks good. Thank you all!

If you have Homebase nearby, this looks similar to the Costco one and seems to be in stock.

butterflymum · 04/12/2020 23:33

Or even cheaper at Argos

ElBurro · 05/12/2020 06:50

I’ve ordered the Argos one- it gets pretty good reviews and should be handy for the garden in the summer too. Thanks all!

I have one of those £39 jobs (not the argos one but theyre prob all similar) and its more sturdy than it looks/costs. Definitely needs a tablecloth though!

TheCrow · 05/12/2020 13:38

We went to our local community second-hand furniture recycling place today and they had loads of folding tables for £10 so we're sorted now and pretty chuffed 🙂

That’s perfect @TheCrow and such a bargain!!!

A decent drop leaf one should seat 6 at a squeeze.

Serin · 05/12/2020 23:03

We have 2 of the Amazon £40 catering tables and pushed together they comfortably seat the 10 of us on Xmas day.
We have had ours years, they are very strong and are also excellent for buffets and parties.

PerditaNitt · 05/12/2020 23:57

I have the Lifetime one from Costco (think I got it cheaper from a different shop). It is super, it folds up really neatly, is easy to put up, and looks fine when you have a tablecloth over it. All of the households in my extended family have one plus some of those £4 folding chairs from IKEA, so whenever we have a big family garden party, we can all pitch in a spare table and a few chairs.
