Before Christmas day or your birthday

I haven't personally.

Usually because my DH “accidentally” leaves his computer screen open (sigh). I love a good surprise

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 04/12/2020 00:28

When I was 10. Not since. I really regretted it.

Onedropbeat · 04/12/2020 00:31

Yes. I often can’t help myself

Found my engagement ring one Christmas Eve

DH now keeps presents at work and then in his car so I can’t peek

I used to go searching the house high and low when I was a child too
I saw it as one massive treasure hunt and found it more exciting than the actual Christmas Day

When I was a kid I looked in the Santa sack my grandparents dropped off just before Christmas. I thought it would be ok because Santa was bringing me stuff as well. Turned out Santa didn't fucking bother and my mother passed the presents from my grandparents off as Santa's own work. I was devastated. Learned 2 lessons that day, well one, It was actually years later the second lesson of that day a hit hit me..

  1. Don't be nosing at your presents
  1. My mother is a cunt

I'm obsessed with hiding stuff for my own D.C. - I would hate for their surprise to be spoiled, even if it was their own doing.

Onedropbeat · 04/12/2020 00:38

@curtainsfort that is awful
So sorry Flowers

felineflutter · 04/12/2020 00:48

Yes when I was 10 I found a stocking and looked at all the contents. It really ruined that Christmas tbh.

Yes, I did as a child and still sometimes do as an adult. I can find surprises stressful sometimes.

My kids love surprises though!

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 04/12/2020 01:38

Yeah when I was a teenager I found some gifts. There was a really nice Baby G watch (remember those bad boys!) and I was so happy, I hadn’t even asked for it. My parents were spectacularly uncool so I was buzzing they’d got it.

Christmas Day rolled around and no watch. Couldn’t say anything as I would have gotten wrong for snooping. Never found out what happened to that watch as I was an only child and youngest in family 🤔

Bubblebox · 04/12/2020 01:46

Nope. In fact I sometimes put off opening presents that I have been given as I often like the not knowing better than the actual gift.

CovidCantKillChristmas · 04/12/2020 08:42

I always do. I hate surprises and am terrible at hiding my feelings if I don't like something. It would ruin my Christmas day if I felt I had upset someone by being ungrateful. Knowing what it is before hand saves the stress of worrying I am going to upset someome. Strange I know!

I had a boyfriend whose gifts were very questionable; it helped if I knew what to expect so could arrange my face into a happy expression rather than a wtf one.

haba · 04/12/2020 08:58

I hate surprises, and my emotions are writ large on my face. I always peek if I can.

My children are the same, so we always tell them what they're getting/confirm they're having what they've said they'd like. Stockings are the only surprises and they can cope with that because they're little presents only. We all have Asperger's though.

Alexindiamondarmour · 04/12/2020 10:43

Two years ago for my 40th I snuck a peak at a present my MIL had sent home with my DH (we live in a different country and he had been to seen them whilst on a work trip).
It was jewelry which wasn’t to my taste at all, it was a necklace and earrings set. I’m glad I looked because I was able to perfect my gracious and grateful face so as not to hurt anyone’s feelings.
I’ve never worn them, they’re still in a drawer.

Ginblooded · 04/12/2020 11:02

Yes, I was terrible as a child.. I once found a pile of my wrapped presents and ripped a tiny hole in every one to see what was inside. I have much more self control now though.. plus it helps that DP leaves all my presents at his mums until Xmas eve 😂

NoWordForFluffy · 04/12/2020 11:05

I was awful as a child and never seemed to learn my lesson either.

But, that feeling of regret after snooping meant that I didn't find out the sex of my children before they were born as I had a feeling I might feel the same! (Probably wouldn't, but can't argue with illogical thought!) Xmas Grin

SlippersForFlippers · 04/12/2020 11:09

No, my husband gets anything from me sent to his mum's address, he'll collect them from her and keep them at work.

Mommabear20 · 04/12/2020 11:31

Growing up my parents went out with their friends about a week before Christmas and would leave me and my sister at home with their friends 2 daughters (youngest was 7, eldest 10 the first year). Anyway my sister and the eldest friend would shut themselves in her room playing games 'we were too young for' and the younger one would fall asleep after an hour, I knew where my mum kept all our gifts so every Christmas I knew what was in every present under the tree! 😂 she still doesn't know now and I'm in my 20s!

jessstan1 · 04/12/2020 11:32

Always if I got the opportunity! I don't like surprise gifts.

thelegohooverer · 04/12/2020 16:39

Goaded on by my bf I searched my dm’s wardrobe for Christmas presents and found the Santa stash. I had been a firm believer and I was so disappointed. I think that put me off sneaking forever.

Doesn't seem at all strange to me, but glad to read I am not the only one! I don't remember feeling bad about peeping at gifts as a child either, it just seemed like sensible fact finding Grin
merryhouse · 04/12/2020 17:02

I once found a book lying around and started reading it, then spent the next day asking everyone if they'd seen it... day after that was my birthday and the book was a present!

(It was The Little Princess, either my 6th or my 7th birthday)

Apart from that inadvertent snoop, the only time was one Christmas (approx the same age) when I woke up at about 5am, and took my stocking into the bathroom so that I could turn the light on.

Having looked at everything I then felt deliciously guilty and stuffed it all back in, and had to pretend to be excited and surprised a couple of hours later Grin
