How do you cook your Brussels?

Last year I did shredded Brussels with chestnuts quickly panfried and they were lovely.

Prior to that I avoided them because the steamed version used to make me gag. Far too bitter.

Any other interesting ways to cook those disgusting little cabbages and make them taste divine?

Cut up some bacon and put in a dry wok to crisp. Slice brussels in 3 or 4. Add to bacon and cook for about 8 minutes.

Sometimes I have for lunch and add some nuts then put in a bowl, add Parmesan and cover for 5 minutes or put under the grill.

This is a daft question but how do you shred a sprout? is it like slice it length ways?

use the slicing part of a grater

I managed to get some baby button sprouts from M&S the other day and they were nice when quartered and pan fried. Quicker than shredding and quite a nice sweet flavour

Ltdannygreen · 03/12/2020 23:07

We steam them then fry them with bacon 😊

Robinkitty · 03/12/2020 23:10

I have my sprouts with butter, marmite and honey roasted nuts. Lovely!

Prettybubblesintheair · 03/12/2020 23:16

@lakesideadvent

Pancetta, chestnuts and maple syrup glaze.
Would you mind posting your recipe for this please?
Littlemissnutcracker · 03/12/2020 23:21

I usually steam them and I tend to make Jamie Oliver gravy (without the star anise) so I that makes them a bit tastier. Almonds sound fantastic with them

lakesideadvent · 03/12/2020 23:31

I don't actually use a recipe anymore but something like this

www.allrecipes.com/recipe/228875/maple-roasted-brussels-sprouts-with-bacon/

With vacuum packed chestnuts added is similar to what I do. (I actually par boil the sprouts for five minutes and don't roast as long but it is the same idea)

jocktamsonsbairn · 03/12/2020 23:53

I like them raw not cooked like most veg! It's a texture thing!!
Every Christmas I pat boil them then fry in butter with bacon, chestnuts and a bit off salt and black pepper. Ddad doesn't like garlic or that would probably go in too!!

BlackeyedSusan · 03/12/2020 23:55

boiled microwave. til some but not mushy. I could eat them like sweets. love them.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/12/2020 23:55

until soft... what the fuck were my fingers thinking?

MissEllaWater · 04/12/2020 08:37

Stir fried in butter with chestnuts and vegan bacon (we're veggie not vegan, hence butter, but strangely vegetarian bacon alternatives aren't half as nice as vegan ones). The 'bacon' bits from Waitrose are fantastic, particularly if you fry them for a bit longer than the pack instructions - they go all sticky and crunchy. And now my mouth is watering.

🤢 Yuk. We just roast a range of veggies in the oven. Sprouts are best given to bunny rabbits and Guinea pigs.
Still each to their own.

user686833 · 06/12/2020 00:47

Honestly I used to love them boild, but then I tried them roasted and would never do them any other way. Easy and delicious. Have converted a few sprout haters with them roasted. You want them in olive oil with some garlic and sprinkled with plenty of sea salt and roasted enough that they just start to char around the edges.

halcyondays · 06/12/2020 07:53

Boiled.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/12/2020 08:11

We all like them - dh loves them - so no need to tart them up, just steamed for a few minutes so there’s still a ‘bite’.

I often quarter them and add for the last few minutes to my whatever-I’ve-got vegetable soup.

LadyEloise · 06/12/2020 10:15

@user686833
How long do you roast them for and at what heat please ?

Silverstreaks · 06/12/2020 10:29

Quartered and pan fried in butter sprinkled with coarse salt. Optional crumbled grilled bacon when serving.
Roasted are good too but they can get rather black. I don't mind but it's not pretty. You can add chilli, garlic, balsamic, chutney etc to them, they seem happy with anything.

CosyQueen · 06/12/2020 11:04

Lightly parboil, shove in a roasting tray, sprinkle in some pan fried pancetta and then drizzle some honey over and mix all together. Put in the oven!

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 06/12/2020 11:25

I boil the crap out of them and eat them like that. Love them

LadyEloise · 13/12/2020 09:19

What annoys me about them is that you need to add something to them to make them palatable for most people obviously not iamtheoneandonlyyy.

With peas or carrots you can just boil them and they're lovely.

I wonder who first came across them, boiled them and thought " Oh yes, these are edible."

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 13/12/2020 09:30

As everything is getting put on table, I quickly tip boiling water over sprouts, and shove them on the hob. By the time people are seated the sprouts are ready to serve - cooked, but crunchy.

I’m firmly of the opinion in that sprouts don’t need any fancy dressing. You like them, or you don’t, and no amount of drizzled whatever or shredded whatsitcalled will change people’s minds.
