Okay, I'll start with the type of things I normally get for our 16 year old son, but would love input from those buying for teens.

  • Fancy (Calvin Klien etc) pants/ socks

*Fav sweets (Candy Kitten and Ferrero Roche- no idea if that is spelt right!)

  • Guiness Book of records (too old now though?)

  • one biggish present (cost normally shared with grandparents) e.g. headphones/ phone etc.

  • Clothes (that to be fair, are normally needed anyway and just replacing ones he has outgrown. )

  • a couple of books (thought maybe Irvine Welsh this year but not sure which one?)

  • something 'active' e.g. basketball hoop, skateboard, this year he is after a punch bag/ weight bench. Any suggestions welcome.

  • aftershave (normally one 'posh' bottle that lasts him the year)

  • any boring bits he might need anyway to bulk out his gifts e.g. bedding, new desk chair, dressing gown.

  • giant tube of pringles, oreos etc (type they sell in b&m etc

*Other things that have went down well are those strip lights to go round your room, a beanie hat, crepe protect stuff for trainers, a google home, vouchers for greggs/ Starbucks etc, new back pack for school.

*Also experiences (but that is harder at the moment) e.g. basketball match, zip wire, driving lesson (under 17 ones etc.)

  • he's just got into making smoothies/ iced coffees, so thought a bit making him a little bit with some 'kit' for that (we have blender but could add syrups etc)

Wow that's some list! My 17 year old is getting:
Airpods
Onesie from fave football team
Beanie and scarf from same
Socks from same
Nice funky shirt for work
Paid online course that will give him qualification for his career - this is £400 and he only asked for me to pay half but as it is vocational I said I'd pay for it.
I do think your son is probably too old for the Guinness book.
My 15 year girl is getting:
Fave sweets
Nintendo switch game
A few clothes from Joules
Two nanobrick (think miniature lego for adults) kits.
She is very hard as she doesn't wear make up or jewelry. doesn't like smellies, not into music. She did get a super duper camera last year though, and I have told them both it is a more modest Christmas this year (though not exactly true in the case of my son)!

Great ideas here thank you. My 16 year old ds is trying to lose weight so I'll nick the weights idea above and also the beanie idea.

He's getting the new iphone12, tracksuit, designer pants, paco rabanne, pyjamas (lives in them), fidget toys.

Ds15 recently had a birthday so he's more difficult. So far it's football boots, pants, paco rabanne, beanie, call of duty.

He wanted the ps5 but no luck there. Let year they got a puppy, best dog ever so no matching that!

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 03/12/2020 06:53

Last year, that should day

Methenyouplus4 · 03/12/2020 06:54

pip If it wasn't clear, that's a collective list of about the past 5 years of Christmas! I just thought the ideas might help others.

He normally gets a big (ish) present, and the rest is mainly fillers of things most kids probably get year round (new clothes etc), but we save it up so he has a pile of stuff but is more affordable. For example, my parents bought him the black trainers he wears for school as his bday present.

We have 3 younger ones who have big a big pile, but this is from charity shops/free sites, which I put together over the year. Thankfully I did that with our eldest when he was little too, as I knew gifts would get £££ as he got older.

Wow my 16year old is getting:

A theory test book
The Highway Code
PC/dvd practise theory test
Fluffy dice
Michelle Obama book
Sweets (candy kittens)
And a couple of bits of (cheap) jewellery

Can you see a theme there? She’s turning 17 two weeks later. However, her main gift was actually jls concert tickets and she was meant to go and watch them, he first ever concert, just before Christmas. Yay for 2020 ruining that plan.

NotExactlyMrsCurrentAffairs · 03/12/2020 07:41

My 15 year old has just had a new phone, so that's an early Christmas present

Galaxy buds
Pyjamas
Dressing gown
Echo dot
Lindt lindor
Choc orange
Monopoly deal
Play your cards right (with giant cards, he will love this!)
Christmas socks
Christmas jumper

4forkssake · 03/12/2020 08:25

My DS (14.5) wants some battle ropes & a slam ball which they use at school so that could be an idea OP. Or a TRX?

ChristmasSlayRide · 03/12/2020 08:27

Mine is getting

RGB headphone stand
RGB mousemat
PC microphone with stand
Two board games.
Smellies
Hoody
Blanket
Sweets
Snood
Money for driving lessons

I'm tempted to get him a weight bench but we'll see.

WeAllHaveWings · 03/12/2020 09:26

most of what ds(nearly 17) is getting is mentioned above. A couple of other ideas

  • Echo Show to replace ancient alarm clock, with coloured/dimmable lightbulbs
  • Footie team calendar/poster
  • 5M phone charging cable
  • Jar of giant chocolate buttons
  • Mega Monopoly

something 'active' e.g. basketball hoop, skateboard, this year he is after a punch bag/ weight bench. Any suggestions welcome.

Space is an issue here so ds(16) has a basic fold away bench he uses for bench-presses and lots of other exercises his PT showed him he could do with the homekit he had. He has a 5ft Olympic barbell with various weight plates (need a good mixture so weight can be increased in small increments - ds starts with reps of 30kg then increases to one or two lifts at his max weight which is currently 48kg) include a couple of bumper plates for deadlifts. Other kit he uses regularly are dumbbells' at different weights and a pull up bar (get different resistance bands so he can do assisted lifts until he builds up strength). Also a floor mat for pushups, sit ups, planks, ab wheel etc. He does some boxing in the gym, but doesn't enjoy that exercise enough to warrant a punch bag at home.

We built his kit up over the last two years but only when he showed he was keen as weights are £££s. Personally, I would go for PT sessions/gym membership as a Xmas gift, the PT will help him with an age appropriate exercise plan and you can gradually buy the kit he wants depending on his own targets the exercises he enjoys. Maybe start with a pull up bar/resistance bands/floormat/ab wheel and some dumbells (he can use the dumbbells during squats/lunges) to find out how keen he is on home exercise before investing heavily with weights. Keep an eye on gumtree/fb market place as there are usually lots of benches/weights bought with good intentions and barely used.

I8toys · 03/12/2020 09:37

DS 17 and DS 15 getting X box X and X box S series as a joint present for the games room.

DS17 - he's just asked for hoodies. And cash
DS15 - just wants the new xbox and a couple of games and cash! May get him an amp for his guitar.

They had new phones last christmas and have ipads and airpods. What else is there to buy!

Noodle bowls and ramen for the stocking, lots of chocs. Its looking a bit sparse this year but I don't want to get anything they don't need for the sake of it. We may be going to Gibraltar after Boxing Day so that will be a treat.

ImNotCutOutForThis · 03/12/2020 12:40

This is all really interesting and helpful, especially all the info about weights etc, thank you.

He produced his 'santa list' last night with an iPhone at the top- that isn't happening! He doesn't look after phones so we're going to have a look at cheaper alternatives.
